More Maruyama Jumbo Tosai

Hi All,

Just thought I'd put out a little teaser to all you folks coming to the ABAKS April 1st/2nd. These pics are of "jumbo" Maruyama tosai kohaku. They, along with the rest not pictured here (some 50 total), will be the subject of sale and a seminar hosted at PS KOI on March 25th. The seminar will be performed by renowned AKCA Judge Burt Ballou. Burt will also be one of the judges at the ABAKS the following weekend. Burt will be discussing the qualities of Maruyama's bloodline, famous throughout the world and most recently acknowledged as a high quality breeder by his 10 year old showa which was awarded Grand Champion at last years All Japan Koi Show.

Russell and I were fortunate enough while in Japan at the AJKS to visit Maruyama"s facilties in Isawa. According to him, (and others have confirmed) we were lucky enough to be ushered into his "secret" greenhouse (Even another famous breeder and his client were turned away). We selected 50 of his highest quality tateshita available.

These fish are now under quarantine procedures including heated water. They are being fed daily as instructed my Maruyama and are looking even better than these photos show (which were taken immediately after removal from the shipping cartons. Rather amazing quality don't you think?!

So, if you're looking for something to compete for Baby Champion at the ABAKS, visit Peters and Sons Koi for a look. You won't be sorry you did.

I don't know why, but my eye likes a hi break in the shoulder area above the pecs. Sort of like #8, but with a broader crack in the hi. Is it my imagination, or is it becoming vogue to have a larger first hi plate which extends back into the dorsal?

Seems like a lot of the fish being displayed at the All Japan Show this year were of that idea. Don't get me wrong, there were also many with a white shoulder break. These tosai were all selected for the ability to grow out and have nice big fish patterns. I can tell you that these were in Maruyama's secret green house. One pond with about 500 or so fish and nearly every single one was patterned similar to these. Maybe his typical step patterns are being kept somewhere else as tategoi and we were not allowed to see them.

Mike . . .

FWIW, I tend to prefer the patterns on your Maruyama Jumbo tosai to the more ubiquitous Sakai Hiroshima maruten 3-steps which, frankly, after awhile tend to seem a bit cookie-cutter.
