Astaxanthin (pronounced as-tuh-zan'-thin) is a carotenoid. It belongs to a larger class of phytochemicals known as terpenes. It is classified as a xanthophyll, which means "yellow leaves". Like many carotenoids, it is a colorful, fat/oil-soluble pigment. Astaxanthin can be found in microalgae, yeast, salmon, trout, krill, shrimp, crayfish, crustaceans, and the feathers of some birds.

Carotenoid is a color enhancer!!

Yes.... I know astaxanthin is a carotenoid, I also know that carotenoids are color enhancers.... What I was saying is "kusuma" may not find shrimp, krill, or spirulina on the ingredient list. Also, the package might not directly claim to be a "color enhancing" food.

Astaxanthin is a very common fish food additive, probably right up there with spirulina, but it is also an ingredient that unless you know what it is, you could easily glance over it.

Nope!!!

Drew, you are absolutely right. I'm so glad you brought this one up!! Many overlook it. I try to "google" every major ingrediant in the foods I offer. ight be sort of fun for each of us to look at the foods we feed and find an ingrediant that we can't pronounce, let alone know what it is and look it up and post the results on a thread?????? I think you would find this very useful.

Almost like a common (and not so common) koi food ingredient encyclopedia?!?!? That's not a half bad idea!

The ingredients could be listed in alphabetical order, with a pronunciation, definition, and a "pro & con" section....

Is this what you were thinking of?

Shiro U

Intersting information. I had a 5 year old Shiro that turned the color of butter, but none of the other fish lost the bright white.
Same diet naturally.
For a pond full of fish I'd say yes to the coloration food, but for me, one Koi?

Hmmmm..... Possibly an underlying condition that is causing metabolic wastes to accumulate in the skin????

Do you still have the Shiro?

Who is the breeder of the Shiro and I take it you raised the fish from tosai or nisai?

You took it a bit further than I was thinking, but YES, that would be the ultimate!! I know it sure would help me in choosing food for the fish. Anyone want to start?

As for the yellow shiro, sometimes if the liver isn't functioning well, you can get this yellow skin.
