Oyo

In another thread, Russell pointed out the development of a variation on Ochiba Shigure that is being called "Oyo". It is mentioned at www.koi-breeders.jp/ where the two pics shown here are posted.

These seem to be Ochiba with somewhat more yellow-orange markings compared to the rust brown markings of the typical Ochiba. I'm not so sure the difference is great enough to be deserving of a new variety status, but given what the Niigata breeders have been through, I'll not worry too much about it.

However, one of these Goshiki-Ochiba got my attention because of her Asagi-influenced blue base. I'd like to see how this one looks in 3 years.

There is a lot of experimenting with Ochiba-type koi. I expect something worthwhile will come out of it in a decade or so, but for now it seems to me that there are just some interesting one-offs.

I have one of these from Hosokai named Sweet Potato for her coloring. I grabbed her just before he was going to put aside to grow for another year or so. I thought that there were just a few, but reading about them the last few days, there seem to be a lot out there. I'm sorry I don't have a picture to show her off.

Carolyn

I don't think there are that many. If what I saw at Hosokai's was any indication, it's more of a "one off" thing at this point. He told me even HE isn't sure what they or the next generation will look like yet. So, we may have something unique that may shoot off in another direction or become a "NEW" variety. Anyway, it's still fun to see what happens. No too many folks are going to have these swimming in their ponds just yet.

last year I enjoyed raising a dozen Asagi babies that came in at 2-3 inches and now have attained over 12. Prior to this post i had planned to do something similar with ochibas in the 3-4 inch class this year. maybe i'll write the breeder and see whast I can line up. One of these weekends I'll catch the nicest of the asagi babies and photo and see if i can get someone to post for me on the board. Then if i do get some ochiba babies I'll post a pic and we'll watch em grow up together.

Dick - that would be fantastic. Ochibas are one of my favorite varieties.

Dick, we really need to get you set up for posting pics... even bad ones. LOL I'd like to see how your Asagi tosai have done, and Ochiba should give a lot to watch.
