Really hadn't thought about this question before. I gues because at under $50 bucks, a no-niche skimmer is cheap enough not to think about the question.

I saw one that a fellow made.... I asked him how he did it... But, that was so long ago... .I cannot remember it... Just seemed like an easy thing to do than to have to pay someone for one....

Koiczar's right, in that the no-niche skimmer is easy and relatively cheap.
But if you are determined to make one, here are a couple of links to another forum which discuss two different types of DIY skimmers. I can't personally vouch for either design since I've never made one, but it looked like a good place to start. Hope they help.

Skimmers will devour food like mad just so you know and remove bugs from the top the koi enjoy and keeps them closer to the surface in general hangout hours per week.

However, if you want a really cheap option, at Home Depot in the plumbing section next to the pvc aisle are some drainage boxes that are made of plastic that will work well. They have 4" PVC or 3" outlets right on them. You can either set it in sideways with the drain on the bottom or set it in upright and cut a notch out of the side in the water. If you set it in upright you can easily fabricate a screen out of nylon mesh with a small 1/2" pvc frame and wedge it in at an angle to catch leaves, sticks, and larger debris. A liner should glue right to it very easily. Some marine grade silicone will also do the trick, and i am sure someone will next recommend Don Brazen's.
