What Variety of Koi is This?

This is one of my koi. I love the creamy whiteness of her skin and the shade of her markings. Is she Kohaku? I have no idea. And also, could you educate me on her qualities and faults? She's about 7".

Looks Like Maruten Hariwake. Its not a kohak. Kohak does not have that Mettalic Sheen to it..

your quess was a good one.....her breeding is from a platinum Ogon and Kohaku.
It's called hariwake ( pronounced harry-walkee) and it, like it's kohaku genetics is judged similarly....it's pattern is cute now as it's small but as your koi grows it will be come more and more underwhelming as a show fish but a nice friend for your ochiba in the pond! raise it well!

Ahhhhh....*nods her head reflectively*....Hariwaki. And Joe added "Maruten" to the name. What does Maruten mean?

Now about the pattern--are you saying that as a koi grows, their markings stay the same size, so they may outgrow, or conversely, grow into them? Also, do you think her coloring will fade with age and growth, or change in any other way? I'm not too worried about the show part at the moment (though I'm hoping that my Ochiba might be worthy). The 6 koi I have are to be my teachers in this adventure, just as you wonderful folk are mentoring me.

I appreciate you all so much. There is no greater gift than the gift of one's time.

Thank you,

Marie

marie,
the eye can rest on a few inches of any surface...if the koi is a few inches long we see the whole koi all at once...on a big koi we see the pattern as one only if the distance between the interesting aspects is not too far apart....the space between becomes open and boring, with.......................... little ......................................bits ....................of................... interest here
and there.

Okay Luke, I think I'm beginning to understand. Say we take this same fish, work some magic, and abracadabra the spot on her forehead enlarges to an acceptible tancho size and the others expand exponentially along her topside (even miraculously place a few extra for balance), she would have an acceptible pattern? And what of her conformation as far as you can see in the pic? Is she shaped right? She's a pleasing pond fish for sure. But structure-wise, is she correct?

I hope I'm on the right track...

marie...the best way to see what is a good pattern is to go to some of the high priced sites and look at their koi...if the koi are the same type and size and one is more expensive it has (or will have one when it fills in and grows up) a better pattern (nine times out of ten). it is a cheap way to get a handle on what is a good pattern.
As to body conformation....the koi has a really really crooked spine (you get my point?)

Maruten is the hi spot on the head when there are other hi patches on the body. Tancho describes a koi that only have the hi spot on the head with no hi present anywhere else on the body.

Luke

Mind if I use this definition with some local newbies as the need arises? That is the best, yet simplest form of describing patterning I think I ever heard, and I've heard and used lots myself.

Marie

Joe used the word "maruten" which describes a separate red marking on the head of a koi, just like "tancho" except there are additional markings on the body as well, e.g. - maruten kohaku, maruten three-step sanke just to name a couple.

Now see? That's how a neophyte gets the wrong information righted. I can't tell you how many times I've seen "tancho sanke," "tancho kohaku," "tancho showa" on the net on koi sites and eBay. Thank you both for correcting this misinformation.

I am so loving learning with you guys! *hug*
