I think it depends on what quality you are looking for, and the reputation of the dealor. I have bought several Koi from Japan on Line and in every case the fish were much better that what the pictures showed. I have been very pleased with Japan Koi Online. But all the fish were $40 to $100 fish. Nothing expensive. And now I am to the point on wanting better koi and spending more money I would be less likely to buy from a picture.

buying a fish from a pic? I never took that seriously...you mean some of you would consider it?
The Fun is going to a breeder's and kicking his sales tanks.

Depends on the dealer, his integrity to make accurate representations, and the purpose of the purchase. If you are buying to win GC, best to see it in person. You can tell alot about a koi just by knowing what line and what parents and breeder is came from by keeping an eye on it's siblings. If you want to win GC, you better buy in person or have a really strong relationship with the seller. That said, multiangle pics reveal alot more than just top shots.
