I have the 150 rubbermaid and have a few fish in there all the time. When I do put new fish in the QT, feeding is minimal at first and then a little bigger later. I figure get through the Q stage first and feed later in the pond. All I use is a wet dry system I got from my bro, That travels through a 1" pipe to the back of a 5 gallon square mop bucket filled with J mat. Stays clear and water test always within? Anything more, me and the wifey be fighty. It's hoopty, but it works. Check it out?

indoor ponds

i wish i could do something with my tank or make an indoor pond, but we have 3 things stopping us...1) a cat! 2) an 18 month old baby! 3) and no money! so its kinda hard at the moment. right now all we have is a 28 gal. tank with 2 small koi, i know its horrible keeping them in such a small tank but its the best i can do right now.

in hopefully about a year we'll have a yard and we'll give them a proper home.

Interesting design, Ray! how much water does your trickle tower filter has at any given second? there has to be some water for the air pump to add any efficency, right? just curious, what's water rate return back to Q-Tank. Also, is there a cover on top of your trickle filter? I would think that it has to be opened or some holes for gas escape, right? how about maintenaince? how often do you clean out the filter? thanks!

Steve

Trickle tower filters are able to catch up to the increased bioload much faster than submerged filters because they are saturated with 02 and bacteria can multiply at top speed depending on temp..

If you have a barrel just pump the return to the top of the barrel. Create your own water manifold with pvc T's, L's, etc and drill 1/4 inch holes in the entire manfold to get an even distribution of water all over the top of the filter media. Just let it trickle down over whatever media you want to use and gravity feed back to the Q-tank. FOr peak efficency add a air pump to the design to produce a counter flow of air rising while the water is trickling down. This means you need to have/build a stand to support the trickle tower at a level slightly higher than the top of the q-tank.

I included a photo of my DIY trickle tower which was made from a 50 gallon barrel. I keep a few small koi in my q-tank all the time but now when I add several new koi or have a fairly large amount returning from a show I find the bio-filtration is able to catch up in at most 36 hours and usually in only 12 hrs. Amquel and a little salt protect the new arrivals until the TT catches up with the new bioload.
