"We" get koi from "Them".
And "we" breed "them".
"We" get the same fry, with the same genetic potential as "Them".
But "We" have different objectives, knowledge, beliefs, and ability than "Them"

American Breeders - Produce nice koi at a certain size. There is still question marks because they have yet to produce really big quality koi in quatity.

Japanese Breeders - Produce high quality koi in the every size range.

Plus a different "culling" or selection process. That is the art of it.

All koi originated in that region, maybe someone remembers the thread about the origins of carp and koi...

the main difference is number of quality parents available, experience in matching them, and water and care methods. Culling plays a role to a certain degree, but I think it is more down to when you hope to sell than necessarily culling skill....most american breeders hope to sell small so they can eat that year......Japanese breeders have been established for generations and therefore do not having the expense of facility development, and have been in it long enuf to have that cushion in their biz so they grow out longer on average.
Most american breeders would have difficulty growing out huge numbers in facilities with water quality adequate to observe and maintain maximum growth. That is why God created the Carribean and our 364 day a year growing season with soft water aquifers and low ph in our wells. I give the koi christmas off, and they get to have an easter egg hunt on easter if they r good and make the eggs.

Resources, experience, and water quality. The dna strains are the same now.

Lol, Heck no! During hurricanes they are expected to protect and maintain the ponds while I am inside enjoying the show. Or should I say cowering in fear, trembling, and hoping the winds don't reach high enuf speeds to penetrate my concrete fortress and turn the house into a blender.

You see I am way above sea level and the winds are higher up here and it gets a little hectic. Luckily for me, if any dams burst, it just means I get to go looting...oops sorry, that was bad etiquette.....

I wonder if Ann Coulter has ever been in a hurricane and what she would say to it.......maybe something smart like 'build a wall'...lol the wall should have been up and will go up but that doesn't resolve the other issues at all and won't do squat to a real hurricane......cute try tho......i heard she looks great in cutoffs.....is this called rambling?????

All of this international focus has reminded me we have not heard from our buddies across the channel, Andrew, Maurice, MarkG, Jules, Gazza, and the others for quite a while, I miss them.....
