Aren't you a goldfish guy?

Hmmm, I would think The Fish Sempai would want goldfish mud ponds. Plenty of us keep goldfish too. In seperate ponds, but with similar approach.

Am I wrong again and there are two Fish Sempais?

From what I have read, you are supposed to use a layer of bentonite clay, several inches thick. Then have it packed down densely. This will make the pond hold water...and not empty down to nothing.

Don't start until you have had your soil checked. Soil characteristics will dictate the pond design and how you proceed. Your primary interest is its ability to retain water and ion exchange capacity. I do not know how agriculture extension services work in Canada, but that is who you should contact first about getting the soil tests done.
