Dale-

It's not just a water temperature trigger, it can be a significant change. For us, the cold night we had last night and the one we are having tonight, could trigger a spawn. A full moon might do the trick. Another water parameter change. There are always mass spawnings at the Louisville Koi show- Memorial weekend. The tank temperature is usually significantly colder than the pond temperatures.

Dale,

When I lived in the Carolinas, 68F was always the magic temperature for spawning. Often the day before a new or a full moon. A falling barometer would cinch the deal. The fish will give you a couple of days warning by chasing.

Steve: In my case there was no advance chasing, but I know that is often the case. Have you observed any other behaviors indicating imminent spawning?

Your fish must be able to tell when you walk up and are looking Mike. Having the bucks become interested in the sow's vent is the only sign I know of.

Mine were warming up to the notion last week as we've had daytime temperatures in the 90's already, but then a cold snap hit and they all got lazy again. The water temps are slowly beginning to rise again and I expext new activity to start again next week if the weather stabilizes. As with last year it looks like the Sanke will likely go first (she's ready to explode with eggs) probably followed by the Ki Utsuri a few weeks later. It seems that ours begin with the males jostling each other for "alpha" status before the females begin flashing about. Has anyone else noticed the males acting that way ahead of the spawn?

Ah, Jamie, even if some fry appear, you really don't want them. You would be much better served visiting a real koi breeder, and you have one in the UK... Maurice. If the stars align properly, you just might leave with some half-inch "culls" (so long as you promise never to say where the things came from).
