Alrightie.

His name is Peter Tran. He's in Irvine, CA. Sells on eBay as petbetta and interestingly enough has 100% positive feedback and a sterling rep...for the time being.

After emailing him about the casualties on delivery, the MIA kohaku, and nicely asking him how my kohaku got left behind and how it might get here after its ship had sailed, I get this last email from him:

Hello,
Sorry about that. I own you 2 koi in a future shipment. If you create a paypal account, I can refund some money. I appologize for the orange and white kohaku.

Refund 65/7 - 18 dollars

You have a credit of 18 dollars(future shipment or refund through paypal.). .

Best Regards,
peter

Now I paid this guy with a money order because I no longer use PayPal (long story). I told him that PayPal is not an option for me--I told him twice because he didn't seem to understand that some people in this world do not or will not use that service. But it seems that if I want the piddly $18 refund (yeah, they were cheap fish--a neighbor wanted some pond fish and I agreed to pitch in if the kohaku and hariwake were mine) I won't be able to get it without signing up again with PayPal or buying more fish from the guy. You'd think he'd send me a money order like I sent him, but ohhhh no.

Anyway, it's only $18, the neighbor gets a couple extra crapagoi (IF that butterfly doesn't expire), and it's not worth the headache pursuing this any further.

However, at least anyone who is looking for pond koi who hears about this story will be forewarned, and that in itself is worth the pocket change I'm out.

Marie------->sure she's a soap opera star right about now

Those fish aren't worth whatever shipping was. ($45)
I'll say one thing good about the dealer(?) that sold them to you...he gave them a level of care equal to their worth... and his fish represent the man....
Those are culls at Blackwater creek...and first time through culls at that.

STOP BUYING FISH NOW...

And I'd love to know how you bought these fish and the person that sold you them.
*LOL* Luke. The story is in my last post. I had only wanted a couple out of the group (along with the two ochibas I already have) to see me through the learning curve of building the new hybrid pond and getting it ecologically balanced (just in case I killed 'em in the process). They are not high quality like everyone here is used to, but I'd rather murder a cheap fish (IF I screw up somewhere) than something I'd be crying about for a decade. Besides, once I'm sure my pond idea is going to fly and the fish make it through, I already have someone that will buy them when I'm confident and ready to move on to better quality fish.

So no, it's not so much that I have a bad eye in choosing koi than I have a learning agenda that does not include risking a valuable nishikigoi.

Wanna see the others that flopped out of that box?

Not nearly as pug-ugly as that chag (if that's what it is) and the butterfly, or the other sanke he just threw in there that I won't offend your eyes with showing you. It's a bait fish for sure...

Yes Luke. *crosses heart* No more buying koi until I'm sure my pond design will fly. Then all bets will be off and I'll be out after some quality koi that I will think long and hard about (and ask all kinds of advice from you pros) before buying.

*girl scout salute and a smile*

No you dont.... You don't have to sign up with paypal again... All you have to do is to have the seller send you an invoice via paypal.....

There is an option which allows you to use the service without having a paypal account... Of the two options, you must click on the one that says, "I don't have a paypal account".......

You can use your credit card to send this payment......

I have three paypal accounts..... and last night, I sent a payment for some comic book video for my husband and used his credit card to do it..... and I had the option of paying via paypal without an account.....

Well, a couple of years ago I started an adventure in pond building. The first one was typically novice--too shallow, under trees that shed copious amounts of leaves, raccoons enjoyed the snacks in there, and to add insult to injury, the insecticide overspray from the orchardist next door annihilated every last living thing in it.

Meanwhile, I made a slightly larger and deeper pond above ground (about 600 gallons), lined the bottom with about 3" of adobe clay, introduced plants, snails and bloodworms to get an ecosystem going, including, yes, string algae which lined the sides. No filter, only a mister to keep a continual flow of fresh water. It became the spawning pond for my Sarassas. I've never had to do much to keep it perfectly balanced, and though at first it was quite cloudy from fish rooting in the bottom, eventually the roots of the plants held the clay fast and it has forever after remained very clear, 7.9ph, 0 nitrites, 0 ammonia. It supports around 30 Sarassa ranging in size from 8" adults (10 of them), to last year's 2-3" fry. Had 3 successful spawns. Lost not one fish to disease, but of course about 75% of the fry that couldn't quite get the hiding game down were eaten. The quality of the adults really bloomed in this habitat (as well as their surviving offspring). Vibrant reds, bright whites, and good growth. The adults were pretty washed out when I put them in there.

The new pond will be designed much larger--15' x 7.5' x 4' deep. Not big, but good enough to experiment with. It too will be an artificial mud pond, lined with a liner, and that lined with several inches of bentonite clay (if I can find enough) or adobe like the other. Over that will be cleaned river sand. I've found that this silty and slightly coarse sand holds the clay better so it won't be as cloudy at first like the previous one. It'll be planted on the bottom with homegrown hornwort, snails and worms. Now instead of using misters on this substantially larger pond than the last prototype, I'm going to make a personalized version of a Bakki filter/waterfall, circulate the water from the other end to the filter for a slight current and provide some good aeration (that's the hybrid I was talking about--not a formal koi pond, not a natural mud pond). It will also be greenhouse covered so no overspray from the orchards or leaves from the trees can contaminate the water, and air will be circulated inside the greenhouse by a swamp cooler, which will keep the heat down during these hot summers we have. I'll let it percolate and see what happens.

No great expense in any of this--it is an experiment in trying to recreate a natural habitat for koi. If it will balance as well as the Sarassa habitat, then my few koi I have in tanks will go in. Then it's a wait and see game how it will hold up. If by the grace of God this is successful, expect I'll next be borrowing the neighbor's backhoe for something much bigger and more permanent.

The hubby surprised me this morning and dug half of it by hand. Tomorrow that should be finished. I am framing it with 2 x 12's which will secure the liner, making the depth 5', but I won't be filling it past ground level. Then on Monday I will ferret out the materials for the filter/falls. I am thinking of trying pumice stones as a filter medium--but we'll see. That's still in the planning stage.

So that's what is in the works. I'll let you know if it is a success or an utter failure.

Marie
