Cool Now THAT would be a surprize...

But not a bad one . Our private learning lab has been a lot of fun. We kept a few dozen from last year and gave a couple of hundred away to new koi-keepers who weren't ready to shell out long green on the front end of the learning curve. We kept a few sanke's and a pearl scaled yamabuki that have been interesting to observe too. No show champs but a great education already

My ochiba have all been doing the color change thing.
When I bought my first one last summer I brought him/her home, put him/her in the pond and he/she turned as ugly as a grouper. He/she changed back. He/she is the most beautiful fish. He/she changes little by little back to his/her original coloring.
I have four ochiba now. They all look dark and kind of ugly.
I just finished water changes and hope they all come back to their former beauty. Right now they are kind of ugly. Mr Munch is still pretty. His dark coloring is outlining the orange on him. He is so purdy. He is a doitsu Ochiba and I think female.
Ms. Munch. The fish is a pig. They seem to really like salt content in the water too.

elizabeth...good to see you posting again....I'm looking forward to getting my 8-10 ochiba 3-4 inchers from Mat at quality koi this month. That way i'll be able to document their growth. As discussed.... genetics, water conditions, even temperature can affect their coloration. They are a neat koi, usually friendly
and will be fun to leaern from so many individuals!

I am going to pick up my Ochiba this Saturday that my hub bought me for Christmas. It is a doitsu Ochiba and I am Rod McConkey got it for me in Japan. He has been keeping it since before Christmas too. He is such a nice guy. My ponds are all ready for a new Ochiba.
Unfortunately, Arthur got a huge shipment in or was supposed to when I was out of town. I've been gone almost constantly since April 6. It is great to be home.
I have to resist going and checking out his tosai. I really like growing them from little guys. Just like kids.

More color change

The ochiba was picked up from Ron and I put him in the pond. This one is a male or we are pretty sure it is. This little guy is going grey too. It only took three days for his color to start to change. He was in a green house where he lived in Olympia and my pond has some serious direct sun. Both ponds do.

I found an what I thought was an ochiba fry in the back pond and put it in the front pond. He too is going grey so I know he is an ochiba.

This is very strange but the same thing happened last year. The ph in the water is and has always been exactly 7. I don't know if that is doing it.

Usually when the shade gets in the water from the plants, they start lightning up again. It is just really interesting that both the front and back ponds have the fish doing the same thing.
It could be a sun reaction. Not sure.

Red face Finally a Picture

Not the best or the best angle, but he wasn't being very cooperative. The Sumi has spread so far now it is hard to tell he ever looked like an Ochiba. You can see blue/grey base from the belly area and bronze/brown markings on the tail tube, left side, and face. I would say the sumi has spread another 10=20% since I started this thread last week.

Just to keep eveything in context, this koi hatched almost exactly 1 year ago and was first noticed as being black with a bronze facial "mask" outline. 2 others from the same spawn showed the same charateristics. During late summer the black began to recede from the belly upward giving way to blue grey, and as it continued upward the bronze leaf pattern began emerging. By late summer when some of the tosai were brought inside to overwinter most of the sumi was gone with a nice Ochiba pattern establishing itself. Now you can see that the Sumi has reasserted itself in a big way.
For reference to before and after, in the following thread;
Accidental Tosai Photos
The first three pictures in the bottom row show him late last fall after the original sumi had subsided and the normal leaf pattern had pretty well established itself.

Here's a couple of pics of my ochibas since I put them out with the sarassas while their pond is being built:

Autumn has gotten more vibrant in blue and gold since hitting the outside world. I've had her for 6 weeks now and she's grown more than an inch. (she's 10" now) That, and though I couldn't capture it with the camera, she has a ginrin crown of stars in the blue behind the gold niche on top of her head. Given that she has that little bit of sparkle, is she still considered ochiba shigure or would she fall into the ginrin class?

This is Jumanji, my "whole body ginrin" ochiba. The color on his head has darkened back to the chocolate brown it was before I bought him. The rest of him has stayed the same--silver ginrin scales with black netting and green spots. I've noticed that when he gets nervous his head pales to grey. It darkens up when he feels secure again. I wonder if he will change colors completely as he matures. He is 7" long.

Question

Here are my two ochibas. The first one is 4 inches, the second one is 6 inches. One is from sakai(H) the other is domestic bred. Can you guess which is from where?

I've seen a few dozen domestic ochibas, but I've never seen a Sakai(H) ochiba, so this is a wild guess:

Ochiba #1 looks domestic, though I've never seen one that small.
So Ochiba #2 must be Sakai.

What makes a ginrin?

Sangreal,
I've been given a lot of definitions of what makes a Koi Ginrin. The first I heard was at least 20 GR scales. The most recent was 4 rows. In either case I don't think the GR "crown" on your Ochiba would tip the scale. I have a GR similar to your Jumanji only mine has a solid gold face. I've never heard of one going from tea color to grey when stressed as you describe, but then again I'm no expert so there's a lot I've never heard of

Brutuscz,
I'm going to guess the same as Sangreal. #1 domestic and #2 Sakai.
