The one thing to remember with BHM is you need to pour masses of water over it to keep it from going yukkie.

*nodnod* That's what I thought. What would constitute "masses?" The proposed pond is 2200 US gallons. My pump should turn that volume over every hour. Is that enough?

Also, I noted that some Bakki showers are built in stainless tubs, some in milk crates. Is the water caught enough that it submerges the BHM or is it just a constant dumping of mass quantities of water to cover the media in moving liquid?

HI Marie,
I would be glad to share with you what I know about the media, and also very interested to hear what you are working on.
I prefer not to get into the topic on the forum again tho, as it just sparks wars and sarcastic comments, my email is dvport4@prtc.net

I have a bunch of info on it and some background info on ceramics and even the dreaded FIR. What are you working on? Just so you know the media was designed for a shower not immersion, but folks do it use successfully immersed.

Bakki Shower

Our 8,000 plus pond is under costruction-see koiphen-Pond construction & filtration- San Antonio Koi Pond Build. We will be using two towers of five trays (DIY) crates - see HenryC's pond Koiphen- with approximately 200kg of BAkki House media in eight trays. The bottom tray will be collection trays for each system. The system will be powered with a Proformance pro "artesian" Low RPM 1/2 hp - 75 pump to each set of trays. This will produce approximately 7000 GPH for each bakki shower. A presure vortex prefilter will collect coarse debre before entering each bakki shower from two bottom drains. So the pond water will be filtered throught the bakki showers almost twice per hour. A 9.0 cu/ft bead media filter will also filter water from a modified skimmer with the same 1/2 hp pump.

My question is related to an earlier question regarding flow rates through the bakki showers. Is this an acceptable flow rate for each bakki?

farne230,
Porous Media Showers ( of which Bakki media is one) work because of the amount of flow over the water...it is NOT the amount of GPH but the amount of times the pond's volume is moved through the media, as well as the SPEED at which the water moves through the tower.
Any porous media will harbor an adequate amount of the microbial life that is needed to do the necessary metabolizing of the fish wastes, and the water splattering over the media will provide the needed off gassing of the completely metabolised waste.
Necessity is the Mother of invention, and it was necesary for the marketers of bakki media to seperate and validate the price of the media...So they Invented the scenario that the "FIR" is what makes Bakki media worth the price. It is not the truth.
If ya got the money to waste, go ahead...but don't believe the FIR conspiracy.
I do believe Bakki media is as good as Lava rock, and you will not damage your koi by using it.

Turnover rate is the key

Just to confirm what has already been said, FIR or no FIR, turning over the pond volume 1 1/2 - 2 times per hour is the key to an effective shower no matter what type of media is utilized. Most other types of filtration systems rely on solids removal through multiple stages of physical filtration before much bio action takes place. Shower trays literally seek to pulverize and completely digest solids rather than remove and discard them so a higher flowrate is essential.

The whole thread is definitely worth a read but if you're just interetested in the Bakki shower part see posts 140, 149, 151, 152, 167, and 181. The last two have pictures of the shower.

Bakki Shower

I am going to construct two sets of bakki showers like HenryC's, each with four perferated trays with 20kg+ of Bakki House media and the bottom tray solid to pool fitered water for distribution to pond. I have ordered the bakki trays from the same manufacturer and expect deliver in a weeks. I will post photos once I pickup a few more batteries. Excavating is going slow due to heavy rains last night and tight quarters to move the equipment. Here are a few photos.
