local water treatment changed

this is for koi keepers in San Jose, California areas. I woke up this morning and heard on the radio that the Almanden water treatment plant in San Jose had upgraded their water treatment facility and will no longer use chlorine to treat the water. they will be using Ozone instead. I don't know if this will have any adverse affect on our friend koi or not. hopefully, it's more suitable for aquatic pets. They said Ozone treatment method provides a better water taste than chlorine. if you are familiar with Ozone water treatment, please shed some lights.

We have had ozonated water supplied by Orlando Utilities for a couple of years. It is a great improvement. It is now very close to being identical to several of the bottled waters folks are paying a lot for... also ozonated from the same aquifer. Some chlorine is still added, but not nearly so much. It is usually too low to have much of a smell. I expect your water utility will still be using something for protecting the water in transmission, just not for purifying the "raw water". So, until you can confirm no chlorine is being used at all, continue to use dechlor. (And ask what they are using to keep water in the lines bacteria-free. )

When it switched, whole new water plants came on line. Other water parameters changed as a result. My water became harder and a much higher pH. So, until all the lines are "purged", test frequently to see if your parameters are shifting.

I live in San Jose but am fortunate enough to have Great Oaks Water Co. as my supplier - NO chlorine or chloramines in use. They own their own wells and it's a "bio" treatment facility!! How lucky can you get?? One exception - it's harder than nails(GH around 300+) and the Ph runs around 8.0 out of the tap. But I don't have to worry about the rest of that crap. Just turn on the tap and do my filter cleaning and water changes as needed - NO WORRIES!!
