Thanks for posting! What a spread.

What did folks think about using the bags? I would think show tanks would be better for seeing the fish, but far more work, etc. in every other respect. At what size do you think it impractical to use bags?

At the All-Japan Show they use bags to judge just about every size.

Talking Congratulations!!!

We would like to congratulate all of the winners at the show, especially to the Grand Champion owned by Ann Nguyen and Best in size 3 owned by Chris Guila.
Both of the Kohakus were bred by Hosokai, pulled from his #1 Nisai pond and supplied by Peters and Sons Koi. Congratulations.

I thought that Koi-Unit and Champ got it right by keeping the fish to size 3 and under. At that size it was easy for one person to easily move the bags back and forth for evaluation. If it was open to size 4 and over, it would have taken two people to safely move the fish. Especially given that judges used the this as a teaching exercise, the ability to move the fish quickly and easily added alot to the event.

Another thing about larger fish in bags is that the top part of the fish will be above the waters surface. The refraction caused by the water will distort the fish's appearance.

Personally, I really enjoy seeing the larger sized fish swim in their tanks. Seeing large fish swim adds alot to the fish's presence. I'm sure I would have had a different impression of Duke's ABAKS GC if it was bagged. It still would have been great, but it wouldn't have been the same.

Dan,

Thanks for the nice "props", and the wonderful array of pics. Your the man for documenting shows, I think we've found you a new position

You left the show about 3 minutes to early. You won the amateur judging contest, and Tom asked does anyone know Dan C. I said yes, and went running to the street, but you we're gone, I thought I had your Cel number on my phone but it was on my desk so I could get you turned around. But you got DQ'd since you weren't there. I've always known you had a good eye, and you proved it!

Congratulations!

As I understood it, Dan tied with Mike Perret for the amature judging contest. And there would have been a run off if both had been present. As it was, I would like to congratulate Mike for winning and both Mike and Dan for their excellent eye.

Yup, both Dan and Mike have the highest score. I tried to catch Dan back too. But it was few seconds late I guess. Since Dan wasn't there during award time, Mike got a nice trophy and $500.00 certificate.

Congrats to Dan adn Mike for the highest score... Who say it is only newbie that win the judging contest?

Mona

Thanks for following up on the info.

Yes, folks, Mona has been in the koi hobby for less than 18 months. She already has a judging competition that yielded a $1000 gift certificate and beautiful trophy for her efforts. Also of note, her husband Dennis told us when we built their pond that this was Mona's part of the landscape renovation. Well, Dennis has developed quite an eye for koi as well. He finished one point behind Dan and I for first place. Not too shabby. Way to go you two. Hope to see some of your beautiful fish at one of the upcoming shows in the next year!!
