help w\ identifying shiro utsuri fry

Morning

Have recently taken a few hundred k fry from Omo shiro utsuri parents to the mud. Have never paired shiro and am not sure what to look for on first culling.
Any direction on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx, Kiefer

but you are probably asking about the SECOND culling.....head/mouth deformities are more common in Shiro/showa fry.
other than that; how old will they be when you do the next culling?

Hey Luke!

Yes, initial deformaty culls and tobi seperations were done at the end of week 3. They are coming up on week six and as is always the case in these large mudponds, they are growing at an incredible rate. Have seen no black fry to speak off but have seen many darkish grey ones. Cant seem to find anybody with practical eyes on experience with shiro fries. Looks like its gonna be another one of those growem and learn type of things.

Where are u at with lake Luke. I have really been out of da loop!

Long time no see

I don't have near the experience needed to be of much help other than to say that some of the grey ones might just surprize you in the dark mud . Mine don't have that available, but I know some of our "accidents" from last year laquer up pretty good in the pond after looking grey all winter indoors. Usturi and Bekko both.

kgt try Maurice's messageboard...he just culled his showa and has pics of the fry...granted he did it the standard way and did it when they were three days old. THAT is when the black fry are kept. Now it is too late.
If I culled them now I would keep everyone that showed a speck of black

Shiro update

Well, it's been about 6.5 months since shiro spawning. It has turned out to be a very low yeild pairing for shiro utsuri although I have talked to others and they have indicated to me that this is usually the case. We have probably eighty or ninty SU'S (out of thousands) in the ponds that at this point show potential. Here are a few mixed in with companinon koi that we brought home as fingerlings to observe and spoil a bit. Pics are not the greatest.

Do you generally keep the one's that have some hi, if the sumi is good...and hope the hi will go away..or do you cull them?

Some nice one's in there...interesting to watch them develop.

Oh yes. There are a good handful with some moderate to weak Hi showing through. Fortunatley, we have so many ponds out here that I can hang on to larger numbers for longer periods of time to observe and continue the cull.
This is especially handy with fry from new and unfamiliar pairings.
