I got mine from the following site. They have them with digital or analog control heads as well as pre & post filters instead of the control head. I have been very happy with mine. Mine is at about 150,000 gallons and still tests 0 chlorine (I test it monthly). It is rated at 250,000 gallons before I need new carbon.

Also check out www.bigbrandwaterfilter.com. They market a variety of water filters. I have not done business with them and offer the site as another reference.

They also switched my water to chloramines and not a problem for me.
The sell them on ebay but I got mine from a local water conditioning company. With 1 cubic foot of carbon and installation it ran around ~$500.I'll get you a picture in a bit.
RobR~

Thanks for sharing your set up. The system I got was a lot smaller, it's like the set up Mike T mentioned with the by-pass, for my use I opted for the one without the bypass.

BTW, does activated carbon remove chloramines?

Mike,

It is only programmable to backwash the unit itself. This way it keeps the carbon from compacting and extends its life. Kinda like fluffing it up.
Lee,
The head is a model 5600. I'm pretty sure it is manufactured by Fleck but believe it or not the owners manual does not state the manufacturers name? Pretty standard...and you should be able too find it anywhere. The tank is just a standard tank. It ran me around $500 for install and the carbon. Normally 1 cubic foot of carbon runs around $100.
Erwin,
When I initially installed the unit I was on chlorine. For over a year now I am on chloramines and like Henry I test the water at least once a month. It's been almost 2 years since the carbon unit was installed and it does my whole house as well as the pond. So far readings have been zero for total chlorine and zero for free chlorine.

Anywhere?

Hey Rob,

Gosh, how I get amused by those in the US who believe even something as rareified as a tank should be available everywhere...

Doubt, we have one anywhere in our country.

Yeah, Rob. We don't have the supply stores you have in such abundance. But, gosh...I do wish we had. I would be their best customer.

However, having taken yours or someone above's advice, I have found them sold on the internet, it is just that 'now' I don't have a clue as to which one...would 'best' serve my purpose.

All the same my reading that it has served everyone so well, and resolved their water problems makes me all the more eager to want to obtain one.

Now, when I can find out which one, I will...

But, it is NOW finding out which 'one' is the 'right' one...that makes this task so much more difficult...and, my being a mechanical idiot makes the task no less daunting.

All the best,

Lee

Lee,

They are all pretty basic units. The water runs through the carbon and wallah......no more chlorine along with many other harmful substances.
The only major advice I will give is make sure you get one that backwashes itself on a regular basis. I love my unit because it is almost 100% maintenance free. The only time for maintenance is when I have to change out the carbon. Right now thats looking like once every 2 years. The dealer told me with just regular household use it should last for 5 years. Then I told him I use about 400-500 gpd on my pond and he said I should be good for two years.
BTW Sorry I missed you this year at the cfks. I was around....where were you?

Very impressive method of adding good water to your pond...why don't more people?

Hey,

This carbon treatment systems all sounds to good to be true.

I gotta wonder - it is so great and so easy to operate, then why isn't it talked about (more) like filters, food, and other technological advancements?

Ya mon, I am really impressed...by what I have been reading. Who wouldn't be...?

Clear water without chemicals, who could ask for more. And, then no maintenance for two years and it's all self activating...Wow, what a deal that is!

Regarding the CFKS. I was there - my friend. As was my wife, Sheila. In fact, Sheila had her JUMBO, that ever popular, Ms. Jumbo in that show and the old girl won best Jumbo. (That's the fish, not Sheila!)

...ok, where were you - then?

I have a catalogue from a manufacturer called flowmatic that sells the same type of thing as rob has, and also canisters and catridges that can get you to near RO quality water if you get enough canisters and the right cartridges in the right sequence.

If you put say 5 canisters, you can go carbon for chlorine removal, then to a tds reducer, then either a hardness reducer(softener) or 5 micron, then to 1 micron, then to .45 or .35 microns, then to .2. They even have one they call 'absolute'. If you do them in sequence right only the less expensives ones should need changed frequently. In ohter words you can get a very large capacity for way less than a large commercial RO system costs.

The canisters range from 10" to 40", and they have a commercial jumbo one too.
If u want more info email me.
