The pros and cons of female koi....

Alot of people in the hobby base their decisions on purchasing a koi on the sex. Not many people have the understanding how a female will develop in their pond too...So what are the pros and cons with females?

I think the list is all negatives but the one positive is the body shape. As soon as a fish is large enough to tell male from female, the male has to go.

Body Shape and, in the proper pond and "hands"..... a better overall looking koi for longer time. Note, in the same proper hands and pond built for males, they can look good for a long time, but at smaller size..

One area where bigger is better

Most of the time when you mix male and female koi together, they spawn and the spawning can injure your koi. So some people choose to have an all female pond, have a separate pond for their male koi, or get rid of the male koi if they want only female koi. Unless of course they wanted a mix of male and female koi in a pond and don't mind them spawning.

There has to be a trigger for the female to induce spawning and that is the male...

Talking Eggs is Eggs!

Female Koi can throw their eggs without a male in the pond. I have had it happen and I have seen it happen at the Dutch Koi Show.

I would imagine that a female dumping her eggs without a male around would be much less stressful then with a male banging into her and chasing her around for hours on end.
