Koi food -- Summer blend

Having come to the last of the Hikari Wheat Germ I fed over winter/spring, it's time to put together a summer blend. Last year I mixed Hikari Wheat Germ and Growth (Hikari or Ogata) 50-50. I know -- pretty conservative.

Having won these bags of koi food at shows over the winter/spring, I thought of using some of them. Any experience or advice? Any other suggestions???

L to R:
Sho Koi Impact 4 lbs (or 1.8 k)
Sho Koi Impact 10 lbs (or 4.54 k)
OSI 168 All Season Growth 2.2 lbs (or 1 k)
Aqua Master Growth 11 lbs (or 5 k)
Ultra Balance Super Premium 5 lbs (or 2.2 k)
Sho Koi Impact 4 lbs (or 1.8 k)

Alot of choices...I didnt see the bag of Hi-Silk? What's up with that? Well, I generally use 2 brands to feed my fish during summer...

Kawaguchi Shoten: Hi-Silk and Sweet Potato
Ogata: Wheat-grem

I really dont use feed that contains color enchancers, but to each is his own. Summer is the season the fish should be growing, Sweet Potato and Wheatgrem as staple and Hi-Silk during the growing months...

Don, if you really want a food additive to improve your fishes overall quality I suggest Izeki Chitonarl-S...talk to Ken if he got somemore...

Hey, Tony . . .

I didn't pick or buy these -- they were raffle freebies I thought I might be able to incorporate into a blend.

Yeppers, Hi-Silk would have been a no-brainer.

Freebies are always good...I that group of foods you have posted I have tried only AquaMaster...Don, I would stick to what is working for your fish now....

That looks like our cabinet in the garage, we have twice that amount that we have won at shows, We have only tried that Sho Koi and the rest we donate to the club raffles. We are koi snobs we only use Hikari, Ogata, Izeki. Honestly don't have an opinion on any of them. Freebies are good, but we stick to what works for us.

I do not have a recommendation on what you should do, but I do use a variety of foods in the belief that one will have what another is missing. This summer I am feeding a proprietary 55% protein sinking pellet (from a dealer who does not advertise on this board)that is formulated to mimic the pellet made by the Niigata breeders' coop...the first ingredient is "concentrated fish protein", followed by fish meal. It is being mixed with about 10% Hikari sinking wheatgerm (leftover from the the cool season). These are fed in the morning and as occasional snacks. In the evening I'm feeding Saki Hikari growth and a mix of Azoo growth (approx. 30%), Hikari growth(approx. 65%)and Aquamaster Color (about5%). So, that's 6 different pellets. I'll be out of the sinking wheatgerm soon.

I like using Azoo because it contains beta glucan, an immune system booster, and fish meal as the main ingredient. Sho Koi Impact is similar, but has feathermeal as a protein source. I used Sho Koi Impact in the past and think the fish did well with it, but I've grown to like Azoo.

i think Mike put his finger on it....a mixture of a little of everything so that nothing is missed for nutrition...

kinda like if you mentioned to your spouse you like her omlete's you'd probably get pretty tired of them served every meal. I too mix my feed. Hikari wheat germ
sinking in the am, a non advertisers floating blend with hikari saki. When i find a worm weeding that gets flipped into the pond.....if i could afford hi silk i'd feed that in late july when our cold NW waters finally get warm enough to feed. i think variety if good....so mix em up!

You mention you use
a non advertisers floating blend with saki Hikari. Seeing as how saki Hikari is much more expensive than HiSilk per pound why not use it? HiSilk is around $6.82/lb. Saki Hikari is around $12.88/lb. Preferably, I agree with the use of a mix of foods. Personally, I've found good results with Hai Feng "Quick Grow" mixed with HiSilk. Now I'm mixing in Saki Hikari. The fish absolutely love it, so does my dog!!LOL

My fish are growing like crazy and look like blimps.
How the heck much am I supposed to feed them??
My fish have never been gobblers, they eat after I leave the area.
