since i've been around since dirt, i used them for many years to good effect.

What makes them so good is the highly oxygenated environment and as the water trickles over the bacteria, by the time it gets to the catch pan it's scrubbed pretty clean.

A 4 foot drop is minimum and if you really want a better designed one blow air stones at the base with vent holes on the top of the column so the dropping water stream works against the rising stream of air.

many moons ago it was touted as a mimic of mother nature's design.....it's a very basic and sound design...

I agree with Dick, tt is avery good system. I have been using it for my goldfish pond for 3 years now - very small footprint, very effective. And when you consider that the media (in my case, bioballs) needed is relatively so much less compared to a submerged system, it makes it even more worthwhile.

Have both a TT and "Bakki" set up... find that the bakki design gets better results in terms of water qualily leaving the TT and BAkki...

Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive... I use the Bac House Media as a personal preference but understand that lava, which is very inexpensive can also be used as a media... All you need are a few trays (milk crates will do) and a spray bar over the trays... Viola! A bakki shower...

Aloha! Mike
