thanks

I live in lower MI and there is anything I need all around us. My brother and I ....mostly he will be engineering this and I am having a hard time finding help that we can rely on. I mean knowledge of effective and efficient construction and maintenance of this pond . Would you have time to guide us? If so are we on track thinking that we need about 20,000 gals for this many koi (250-300)

Don't know of anyone in MI selling it but you can order it here Japanese Filter Mat - Champion Nishikigoi As for helping you design a pond: All you need to do is post a topic on needing help to design a pond. Tons of folks on this board will help you.

Kev, it does seem like you are biting off more than you can chew at this point? 250-300 fish requires a lot of effort, work and expense, as you are no longer caring for individual fish but rather a population of fish. That takes some experience also. The LAST thing you want to be doing is treating 20,000 of water or injecting 300 fish with antibiotics because you didn't get the system right? Are you and your brother planning on making this an internet business or something like that?

20,000 gallons is nice but you will have to filter and move that water. So you will need at least three bottom drains ( maybe even four or five depending on dimensions. And each of the three drains will need separate motors if you are going to do this right. And each of the drains will need its own bank of prefilters ( vortex or DIY sumps) and Jmat filters. I'd like to see fairly large filters for such a large and fully stocked system, so figure at least 6-8 feet of filter space per bay for the Jmat. This can be hidden under decking around the pond itself. - JR

WOW Thats a crazy amount of koi. My pond is 16,000gal and I have 30-35 koi. I sometimes feel that may be too much as they grow. Even if you say 1 fish per 250gal...you're stil waaaay over. Definitely sounds like a time bomb!!

Jamie must not have a copy of my DIY CD

My current DIY filter design, is a 4x4 settling chamber made with wood frame and rubber lined. Inside the chamber is a 55 gallon barrel. The barrel is full of slits. Inside the barrel is a center tube, also full of slits. This is where the pump draws its water. The barrel is full of Bickal Bio-rope. Settling chamber takes out the big gunk, bio-rope filters out the fines, and does some bio and the pump pumps out to more bio, trickle tower, or whatever you please.

Cheap, easy, effective.
