This is why I subscribe to KB and this is the kind of content that I've come to expect from Brian and KB. I noticed he closed the article with "to be continued". I can only hope that we will see more in an upcoming print or online article.

On page 5, some content is obscured by the second photo although it may not happen with all browsers. If your browser is having the a problem, the content under the photo is quote below.

Quote:
Iizuka produced "Sakura" with the mother from Sankuro Line, so it has the style that is outside the realm of Sensuke. It gives the rounder impressions on shiroji, plumpness, and the shape of the face. Hiroji Sakai states that the quality of hi is "the mixture of persimmon and pink"

Especially the part in the text concerning the Sankuro A line that reads:

There was no darkness in beni - all bright, gorgeous, and piercing." Not only that, the babies produced from them "were just like that in 99% accuracy. All in unison."

And that is why I want to see pedigrees of bloodlines, so I can intelligently go about breeding what I want to see in my koi when the time comes. It's not about famous names, it's not about popular breeders, it's not about blindly buying a name brand of koi. A pedigree is one's road map to what s/he wants to produce, and without it is like driving with the sun shield still across the window--no telling where you're going to end up and the odds of wrecking are greatly enhanced....

Thumbs up Excellent Read

And herein lies one of the major differences between Japanese breeders and all others. The knowledge of lineage mixed with the skill to not only select the right parent pairings, but going further back to pick the right grandparents as well. Coupling that knowledge with the tremendous discipline required at culling time produces results that are undeniable.
I wonder if we wouldn't produce much higher quality Koi domestically if we were better disciplined than we are. (speaking strictly as a backyard ponder here)
