I cannot say what is best. I can say that pre-filtering is essential to prevent terrible clogging with algae and such. I am reasonably satisfied with the water entering my Aquadyne going through a Savio skimmer. That means the water first goes through a leaf trap that captures most large debris, and then through a mat in the skimmer, removing the smaller "algae glarf", and then a leaf trap on the pump captures any larger pieces of debris that got through...including toads and frogs that jump over the internal barriers of the skimmer only to get sucked to their deaths in the leaf trap.

Do you have a settling chamber as part of the prefiltering? Plus do you have a blower for your Aquadyne?

Ok so here are spec on your submersible pump.

It looks like it comes with a prefilter for one of the two inlets. For some reason yours did not come with this? You could probably make one for it but you will spend a lot of time pulling it out of the pond and cleaning it. So probably some sort of plastic box with a slotted lid with a piece of coarse Matala would work. Then just run that back to the pump. This is of course not the best to remove koi waste from your pond as it will clog regularly, probably not as often though with no prefilter which clogs the pumps impellors. The best would be a bottom drain to settling chamber to an external pump. Another idea would be a retro bottom drain through the side of the pond and into a settling chamber and then have the pump pull water from there.

I'm sure that would work but remember in order for it to function you will have to go through the side of your pond below water level in order to be able to use a settling chamber.

You could use a prefilter as used for swimming pool pumps (see foto's) between your pump and the beadfilter. I used one of these in a similar setup years ago. I put a filterbrush in the prefilter and it would hold most of the dirt and blanked weed. Needed to clean out every day (1 minute work) but it did the job (preventing my bead from glogging with algae)
There is no need for a prefilter before the Auquamax pump (its standard casing works oke) as this is a vortex impellor pump that will handle solids up to 8 mm (1/3") and also blanked weed.
Grtz, Hans
