Thanks for the education on asagi. It definitely helps. This one does have red on the cheeks..I just don't have a good photo of it. My biggest concern was the head clarity and the less than vibrant hi. Oh well...another one for sale. The search for the perfect asagi continues for me.

Maybe what i learned from last year may help...I purchased 10- 3 inch average
length baby asagi's. They were all brothers and sisters from the same spawn
from japanese parents. I watched them grow and change and really enjoyed myself. I have two left. A male ( the best one) and female (she's still developing ) It may be another year before i know how the girl turns out. The guy is really nice now. I knew how the parents threw babies from the previous spawn and I selected them by photograph to my standards at that age. basically i got one out of ten...not a good percentage for someone that has a clue as to what to look for. So i hope that helps you figure the odds of finding a good one. At three you know what your buying but now they are expensive....

the male i just got from mat at quality koi was the most expensive fish on his auction two falls ago including many nice gosanke's. his picture is the one you see everytime I post. Good luck with your search.....

Dick, did you mean that Matt breed this fish or that Matt was the dealer for this fish?

Sorry, I didn't mean to show a lack of faith in (or respect for) our domestic breeders.

Matt is certainly one of our best and I wouldn't be surprised if it was his. I just wanted to check.

yes, Mat Bred this koi and picked it as his #1 tosai. last fall when I saw it come out of the mud pond, I got a chance to see mom and dad. Some day here soon I want to get his #1 Shusui. My koi kichis, gene and Phyllis in Idaho got thier #1 shusui the same year and it's georgeous.

i think the US and UK have some very talented domestic breeders.

Most of my domestic are from Blackwater creek in Fla. I have to admit that their quality has improved each year I have bought from them. I can put some of their domestics next to imported and it is difficult to tell the difference. I also believe I have a better chance of getting a "top" fish from them than a japanese breeder. It seems they like their top koi to stay in Japan....and of course the price difference goes without saying.

Just for fun (and because it's raining and I'm bored!!!) Here are two more asagi's I acquired for sale. The first one is 7 inches the second one is 5-6inches. Both are domestic. Let me know what you think of them. I find this very helpful...I always find asagi to be very difficult to pick.

My quess for the first one is that it will be male. It will have too much red when it matures altho the red coloration is good. The red over the body at the base of the tail is a sign of lots of red to come as well as the advancement of the ship's bottom red over the top of the lateral line. The asagi han blue is pretty and i think the forehead/nose area you can learn from as what to look for,.....

the second koi i like because the red is not over the body part at the tail just in the tail and none in the dorsal. lots of red around the head tho but good to learn on as far as color development.

I have seen blackwater's better shusui and asagi's and they are VERY GOOD!
