Mine is fairly simple, prefilter thru a large container of carbon then thru peat moss, then a very low micron cartridge (.1 or abosolute), then drip thru a commercial R/O membrane, and a tds post R/O reducer if u want. If it doesn't give u enuf volume (in most city water systems it will), then you can get a cheap pressure system from a local hardware to drive it (many of you on wells already have that and may not know it). An iron removal cartridge will also save your membranes on those with well or source water with high iron.
Put pressure gauges before and after the membrane so u know when to change it. The only costly part of that is the commercial volume and grade R/O membrane, and the pressure system if needed. Compare the costs of all that to the cost of 5k or more for a decent commercial R/O. If you do a cost analysis on using 3000 gallons a week, you will cut your annual cartridge costs about 70-80% that way over using a residential size R/O.
