I use to use a filter mat that was poly coated hog hair. I think it was an imitation of some kind of filter that utilized FIR

I would not be surprised if there was. Anything that has a market, high margins, and low complexity is ripe for counterfeitting.

Personally I would think why bother? I'd still be interested if it was marketed independantly as a cheaper, Bacteria House alternative.

A true counterfeit would be sold and marketed as Bacteria House. If they call it Bacteria Media or something like that then its just a knockoff.
