If you are plugging the extension cord into a GFI recepticle, then you do not need another GFI in the cord.-steveh

Just do it right the first time and hook up a GFCI on your power source. trying to overthink and cut corners is a sign to just do it right the first time or else you will do it again. Like someone said.. Might as well hardwire to your pump.. Or get some romex cable and set up a few receptcles near your pond. You never know what kinda things you may want to plug into it.

Just some thoughts and trying to help.

Do Not Use Romex!!!

I am a general contractor and am familiar with a lot of the building codes, which includes electrical. If you are running conduit outside to take wiring from your house to your pond you absolutely can not use Romex. Romex in conduit will heat up and break down over time, causing more problems. It is not allowed in any electrical code. In conduit you need to pull the right size THHN wire. You might also want to make it a dedicated circuit.

You can't run wire underground without conduit, so I was assuming that was what you meant. You really shoudn't bury any 110 wiring underground without conduit to protect it from shovels or rodents. You can not have any 110 wiring run above ground either unless it is protected. Romex can be run in walls or in a crawl space if you follow certain requirements.
There is a direct burial wire available, but it must be 18" below grade.

Wiring under decking should be rigid conduit with THHN wiring.
