Sorry Luke got to disagree with you.

Koi win the prizes and the competition is between the number of koi eligible for each award.

The owners, no disrespect to them, are incidental.

Koi shows are about Koi, unless you Yanks see things differently.

Yup, it takes me quite sometime to convince my koi buddy Duke's to bring his's 36-38" Yoko to the show after many years in retirement...

Congrats to all the winners and welcome again to the board Benigoi....

bern..Koi do not compete. unless it is for a just tossed prawn, or position on a spawning female.
Humans compete at a show.
Koi are incidental. they are the vessels of the work and decsion-making, and skill and luck of the person that decided to show the koi.
A koi does not show itself.
rare animals Compete...horse that have the desire brought forth through selective breeding come to mind. they take an active role in the competition...they decide to compete.

Dog Fanciers tell me at dog shows the dogs are competitive. Certain dogs "turn-on" when taken into a ring. They know they are being shown and they make the most of it.
Koi are the vessels that hold the decisions made by breeders and hobbyists, nothing more. it is the breeders and hobbyists that make it a competition.
koi do not compete anymore than works of art compete in an art show.

Luke,

As a judge I look at the Koi and give the awards to Koi.
For any given award there are a number of eligible koi and they
are in competition with each other for it.

As a hobbyist, when I read show reports I wan't to hear about the Koi and see pictures of it. I am not that bothered about the owner unless it is some buxom babe.

The owners bring them to the show and look after them when they are at home. The owners deserve to be congratulated at the end of the show regardless of their koi's success because without exhibitors there wouldn't be koi shows. But at the end of the day it is still all about the koi.
