The canals around here are full of them. I do not know, being an indigenous fish, if they are sold or not.

Here in Santa Clara county of California, we call the county department of environmental health for mosquito fish. They even bring them to your place (free of charge).

Perhaps, you should try to call the department at your county...

We also get them free in SoCal, our local Vector control gives them out. Call your city hall and ask for vector control, all cities have them and they should be able to supply you with some. Remember those little suckers multiply like bunnies.

Mosquito Fish

Would they survive the winters in PA? And, if so, are you SURE you want them? Once they are in an environment where they can survive, they eventually put a very significant bioload on the pond.

I have them in my water garden pond only, We keep them in there because there is not much water circulation, my lillys and lotus dont like alot of water movement. Would never put them in our koi ponds, have great water movement, and any mosquito larve would be eaten by our koi. Besides you could put a dozen in a pond and within 1 season have 100's of those little guys. And they are very hard to catch, and no way to kill them without harming koi.

tell me what you specifically want Gambusia for.
if it is mosquito control, just go to the bait shop and buy a couple of dozen of the small minnows.

Had them year before last.... They do breed like mad, but they did not make it thorugh the winter.... Not very large....

I wanted them for mosquito control... Also to fill out the pond.... I lost alot oif koi lately and I only have 3 left..... So, I was hoping to have more creatures out there... But, mainly for mosquito control.....

As for the koi I lost, I treated with Kordon Pond Ich and it has stopped the flashing as I believe it has killed off the chilodonella......

Spreading Gambusia around is beginning to get a bad rap from environmentalists. They tend to monopolize some ecosystems to the exclusion of native fish.

If you just want them for mosquito control and they are going to be killed by the winter cold, you might as well use platties or swordtails which will provide a little color at the same time.
