I guess you have to know your pond very well to know what direction it will take your fish. If the guy has faith in his filteration then it is all good so to speak...If I could I would turn the water green, but I have way too much shade.

JG: Be Nice

Hey JG:

Your quote:
Why do all the wierd things happen to people who r already slightly paranoid? No wonder he needs meds!

Be nice, don't want this thread to be locked up or thrown out...

Besides us island guys, be it PR or HI have an advantage over those norte americanos who have to put up with the 4 seasons... Remember as we're hanging loose, chilling out and singing "Don't Worry, be Happy"... the NAs are either digging out of the snow or watching their cars being washed away by spring floods and rain, then putting up with heat waves. Even I might be a little paranoid after putting up with that stuff...

JR: NJ in August, I remember it well

JR:

In August of 1973 I was enrolled in a 6-week training class for a new company I had just joined... One of my classmates, who claimed that he grew up in the area, offered to drive me to DC... Apparently we took a wrong turn and ended up at the shore... So figured what the heck we'd make the most of it... I was amazed the there were 19 ocean rescues reported at Avalon alone, during the two day period...

What does this have to do with koi , well we slurped tons of clams and drank more than our fill of beer, like what I hear you and Childers do at koi shows... so does this qualify as a koi thing...

Aloha! Mike

If it was possible to manage the growth of unicellular algae in the typical koi pond, it would be great what it could do to enhance water quality and improve the fish. But, even the very best and lowest stocked koi ponds are huge producers of waste that lead to uncontrollable algae growth/decline cycles. It was learned long ago to rely on nitrifying bacteria to manage the waste rather than algae. If the nitrifiers are maximized, the unicellular algae will not thrive.

Indeed. Tiger by the tail. It is very natural for a budding hobbyist to long to have a backyard pond that 'cooks' like a wild field pond or an earthen man made pond. It will never happen. The biology is different. Too much microbial fauna and flora adds to the BOD in a pond. It is NOT a good thing. The only similarity than between that mud pond and your home concrete pond is the color green. After that- a tiger by the tail. JR

I'm the only poor guy in a high falutin area of NJ! 3 1/4 acres in North NJ. ( Morristownship, Harding/New Vernon). Deer, bear, coyote, hawks, turkeys and trees- lots of trees. In fact, go to Nigel Caddock's book Still Water's ( pg 211) that backdrop was taken in my yard. The snow picture I posted is also in my yard ( daughter and my husky, Nikki) My property backs up to Jockey Hollow National Park- the spot George Washington's soldiers trained on- the area where the soldier hunts were and the training ground itself was are in this 100 acre plue federal park- just a short walk from my back gate. It is also the location of one of the main Lanape Indian tribes. It is not unusual to find an indian arrow head on my and my neighbors' properties when excavating. We also have within three miles, a place know as the Great Swamp. Many hundreds of acres of marsh land where ducks and geese rest over the migration, very cool sight in the fall and spring. And the wild aquatic plant life diversity is unbelievable. You can hike for days in these two areas. And best of all, I can be at a Broadway show, the world's best art galleries, the Museum of Natural history, the Met or dining at la Bernardin in 40 minutes - door to door. Life is good in New Jersey.

Dinh, that's " O, New Jersey? Which exit off the Turnpike?"

well, it is much better and more security for a poor guy to live in a nice town with more than 3 acres property ;-)) ....Morristownship is a wonderful place, been there... Used to work for Bell Lab in Whippany, NJ... love the place....

Very nice place out here in California, but still missing the east coast winter from time to time....

Mike, sorry for side-bar....

Mike, I grew up in DC so know all about the joys of weather change, even lived not far from JR in King of Prussia outside Philly. In George Washington's real home in Valley Forge. In fact the house I stayed in was a historic landsite where the man himself stayed during cold winters and was the old blacksmith shop. It had secret entrances and tunnels and the whole nine yards. Big ol house in Gulph Mills, across the street from the infamous Bird In Hand Loft, where notorious dignitaries have engaged in questionable activities for centuries. My point was one of sympathy, that all those crazy types of things (suddenly not being able to log on) happen to folks who are already 'well tested'.
