JNorth,
I was thinking of letting the free-loading scum watch and read the conversation of the god almighties.
they would have no reason to think that they are worth being discussed.

Sigh...It has nothing to do with free loading scum or god almighties. I obviously did not explain it well. All of the technical info at that site is freely available to anyone that wants it. The member section is more of a place where the members discuss things they don't want the Goggle search engines to see and also a member to member classified section. Here see for yourself http://www.chevelles.com/forums/

Have features that are available for the education and enjoyment of all readers with prominent space for advertisers. Open readership would allow a much broader audience which is a good thing to promote sponsorships. Also, informative articles help strengthen interest in the hobby at a higher level. Could gear this area towards new(er) hobbyists and have basic info like glossary of terms, reference type stuff, etc., as well as "Koi-Bito" level feature articles.

Then, have other features available by subscription only. These areas could have more limited space devoted to ads, and those really in-depth articles and interviews that we all crave and lots and lots of photos! I like Luke's idea of "live chat" sessions occasionally. You could post "teasers" of subject matter in the free area to encourage new subscribers. Subscribers could get DVD issue(s) or as someone mentioned in another thread - an occasional special printed issue.
Creating two people groups will create two factions that will inevitably wind in jealousy, resentment, and a war. The offended(teased) parties will invariably go off and attack at other boards, leave koi chat rooms altogether, or start a 'better board with articles' etc etc. The war will rip this board apart given enuf time and the right ingredients. It will also create an exclusionary clubbish mentality with secret jokes, comments, and winks etc.
Many will perceive that as rich folks being snobby elitists and become offended. 90% of the folks in this hobby are middle to upper middle income folks with kids and family values. So that sort of thing won't go over well for very long. It can destroy the comradery needed to build a strong, unified community. Make the mag either free or ALL the articles and their content need subscribed to.
I think if done skillfully, the ad revenues could be plenty to run the site on, especially if the auction end kicks in strong and a % of that goes to the house. People are not very likely to pay to 'get to bid' on an auction. Having the articles free will motivate breeders to both advertise and make themselves available for in depth articles as they know it will reach many more people like that, giving them more public exposure and a better name. That is what drives ad revenues and gains a larger number of willing advertisers.
To be frank, the 'survival' of the mag has less to do with it's quality(which we all agree Brian has nailed), than with it being done in a manner that affords Brian and his family an acceptable lifestyle and future.

Here is another thought, a way for folks to 'pay' for their subscription could be to give say 10 emails of folks they think might be interested in or have a pond that Brian could shoot an infomercial about the site to occassionally?
