Liquid (Sodium T.) Dispenser

would like to use 13% sodium thisoufate liquid to
neutralize the pond incoming tap water with 3ppm
chloranine. The Dosatron liquid dispenser was the
first in mind just because of my awareness of its
existance. The cost is quite stiff at $425 new and
about $200 plus used at Ebay.

Does any recommend a cheaper version of liquid
dispenser that is accurate enough for the job?

Any peristalic pump will work. A peristalic pump has a cam which mashes a piece of tubing and pushes the fluid along. They start at about $100 at Aquatic Ecosystems. Without a variable speed controller (many extra bucks) you may have to dilute the sodium thiosulfate to get the proper dose.

Most people say that sodium thiosulfate is non-toxic. In reality, it is only slightly toxic. I have never heard of it killing anything outright except for sensitive larvae. If the chlorine level in your source water fluctuates, you will have to set the dosing to neutralize it at the highest expected concentration. This means that there will sometimes/often be excess sodium thiosulfate which has not reacted with chlorine. Probably not a problem for koi, but keep an eye on it.

what's wrong with mixing it the traditional way and cup it in with the water change?

I personally don't think it's necessary but by all means try one out and let us know how it turns out.

Hi Dinh,

RT is my first choise because it works instantly (& cheap) while Amquel can take 20 or 30 minutes to remove all the chlorine/chloramine. The small problem to be aware of is the residual left behind by ST. You can read it on a colorimeter. I usually add a small amount of Aamquel after an hour of so if I'm changing a lot.
