Question

ok...I understand your point. Less red on the fins...light back, clear head. I was just concerned about the dark area over #2..just before the tail. I assumed that would get too dark!! I added another to the mix...this one is smaller..about 6-7 inches. Nice and light...but what do you think of the head???

The dark area on the head is the underlying bone, not skin coloration.

I think the head will turn out fine....mike is right on with his observation.

I think the koi is a male, I think it was raised in crowded conditions as the face is a little pointy to me and i like to see some red on the gill plates at this age.

back to your other comment on #2 and the black splotch.....black/blue is always strongest in the tail area in any color species....many yearling showa have what is called false black that covers up the tail stop only to crawl off at two years and reveal red or nice white odome. I wouldn't worry about it at this age....

#2

#2 is my choice. I have never been disappointed in a fish that I have chosen with a big head. The fish just needs to grow into it.

Wink

See...that's why I need you guys!!! #2 may end up in my pond as well. I have that one listed on ebay now...But may decide it is a keeper. If it doesn't sell the first time around...it's mine!!! Unfortunately, can't keep them all!!! My local koi dealer (my wholesaler) Got in about 150 asagi 4-8 inches. It took hours just to pick out this group of four...hard work. I was getting dizzy from all the blue. The absolute best one he had was 7-8 inches and had a torn fin...It was ripped down to the base. I wasn't sure if that would heal, so I left it. I'm sure it will heal fine...be in a show, and kick my ass one day. That would be my luck!!
