Saki Hikari waste ?

feeding Saki Hikari for the last two months. Haven't seen any improvement in quality and skin yet... But one thing I have observed that very little waste in the water compare to other brand. Question is, is there any sicentific reason because what made the food or it is just invisible to our eyes? I meant, the waste is in different form that we can't see it after mixing with the water?

Thanks,
--Dinh

Thumbs up

I've had the same result with Hikari Staple compared to last years feed, particularly in my Qtank where excessive waste is clearly visible. I'm of the opinion that the "high digestibility" advertised is real. Less undigested feed = less waste and more growth/energy delivered to the koi.

I am a firm beleiver that the less waste produced, the better. Having said that, I also beleive that the quality and luster the Koi develop are not entirely due to what you feed them. Water quality is also very important. Having the right minerals and elements in the water is vital. Adding clay to the water that supplies these elements is one way to do it.

Hikari claims the "germs" they put in the food help with the koi's ability to digest it's food more thouroughly. I do think this food needs to be fed at higher temps
to also assist the koi in digestion. Since we all agree that this produces less waste, then that will definetely affect the quality of water. As suggested there is a lot that goes into making quality water....contributors include minimal stocking, 24/7 introduction of new water and heavy oxygenation.

Here in the west slope of the state of washington, temps are still cool, so i am feeding a mixture of this food along with the basic winter feed from mat at quality Koi. As the temps begin to approach 70 F I will begin feeding more Hikari.

I remember an article with an interview with Oomo-san (Fujio) on food and how he suggests using smaller pelleted foods for better digestion. In the interview the author asks if this a new secret and fujio laughs it off and says all the breeders know to do this! I got to thinking about this and remembered all the places i nosed around at in japan and never once did i find large pellets
that they were feeding! So the last 3-4 years I have fed exclusively medium as it seems to make sense.....just an observation.....

I heard this practice from more than one source, however my question is how does it impact your larger koi? About 2 summers ago I tried going with using med pellets only and my larger koi seem to struggle with it. They seem to work harder at getting enoungh food. Today I use a combinantion of 25% med sinking pellets, 25% med floating pellets, and 50% large floating pellets during the feeding season. If there are health benifits to using smaller pellets, maybe I should go back to using 100% med size pellets.

The larger pellets are definitly harder for the Koi to eat and digest. I only use mini pellets.

From a physics standpoint it makes perfect sense. A pound of smaller particles will have more surface area than a pound of larger particles. Larger surface area means more surface contact between the food and the koi's digestive enzymes...hence, better digestion. I stick with smaller sized food for this reason as well.

I like feeding smaller pellets.. But when it comes to some of the other foods I use. The smaller pellets cost a bit more 20kg bag of Large pellets and 20kg bag of the smaller pellets? 50 bucks more

I guess its hard to produce the smaller Pellets?

The only 20kg bags I know of is Ogata and Hikari in small pellets, all the other high end food medium and Large comes in 15kg bags.
