Steve,

regarding your prediction on the Showa, what's wrong with the head/body that lead you to predict it won't grow to a large fish. I a novice here so be as details as possible so I can learn (hopefully!). is it the head too short?

Showa - can't grow large with that head/body shape (but I'd like you hear your feelings on this aspect), probably female.

Sanke on right - bald but interesting, sumi mainly on beni and not balanced front to back, probably female, looks like it can really grow.

I would be proud of any of them, but would pick sanke on right.

I looked at that showa for a long time wish I could put my finger one it Steve. That's why I asked for other opinions on the showa's shape. Professor Benbow told us a fish with growth potential will have a wide distance between the eyes and a longer length from gill to eye than eye to nose. He also said there should be at least 4.5 head lengths from the nose to tip of tail. The showa has all that. It might be the way that the width continues to increase from the eyes to the gills that reminds me of a group of utsuri we had which grew into short stubby fish.

I'd pick the Showa, mainly because I just want one . The sanke both look decent, but neither of them grab me. I'm not so sure about the Showa's growth potential question. Short and stout may wind up being the case, but the basics for good growth do appear to be there.

Steve,

thanks for the pointers. can you clarify "4.5 heads lengths from nose to tip of tail"? I don't understand what this means. tia!

Steve, here is Dick's original post:
Conformation and Skin Quality

From the photo, the sanke have proportionately longer heads, but the showa seems to make the 4.5 mark. Like I said, I would be proud of any of them.
