this has been a good thread gents, thanks. What has been interesting to me
as of late ( being a big Toshio sakai fan ) is the mixing of beni and sumi among the big three that he produces. JR: I loved the chip and dip example, quite discriptive!

No problem Mike, thanx for your answer.

I have to agree with you that it is well worth it. About two years ago I found a nisai nidan Kohaku that is still the best example of hoshi beni I have encountered so far. Unfortunaltely way too expensive for me

Here's one of my 'older gals' with some very thick beni. the key to this look is the laying of many light colors that ultimately creates a thick beni plate. The special luster cells throughout this beni plate complete the effect. This koi is at least 14 years old now. Photo taken in late fall of 2005.

14+? ... I knew you knew what you were doing, but that's really showing off!

Long term experiment

I have recently acquired my only two Kohaku. Both are nissai (just) , one from the Murata bloodline and the other from Matsunosuke. Having read a little on this and other sites I would not have bought the latter (I am a beginner), but I won the Matsunosuke fish in the NI draw. I see this as a great learning opportunity. This pair are resident with 6 other koi (all sansai) in my pond of 3250 UK gallons, filtered via nexus easy 200, with 130 litres of air. They will be heated over winter to approx 14 degrees Celcius. I wonder how they will compare in a year or two?
