that is some sort of injury. My quick 2 cents procedure:

1. go to a drug store, like riteaids, buy a tube of extra-strength triple anti-biotic ionment.
2. buy iodine solution (the one used to treat wound), and Q-tip.
3. bug Oil of clove. This is tuff as I know many drug store don't have them. Some koi joints have them, at a high price.

4. net the koi, put it into a bowl.
5. add clove oil into the bowl, roughly 0.5 CC per 5 gallon of water. slightly higher dose of clove oil can help knocking koi out faster, too much will send the koi to heaven.
6. wait a few minutes, you will see the koi getting knowck out.
7. take the koi out of the bowl, dry he wound, cleanit real throughly with iodine. then apply generous dose of triple tanit-biotic over the wound.
8. put the koi back into the pond. it is better to put it in a net first, then release it after it regains concisousness.
9. for few more consecutive days, net the koi and aplly anti-boitic.
10. if the wound is big and deep, you should inject it with anti-biotic, like baytril.
11. goto koivet.com for more info.

Hello burky and welcome to our board, nice to see you posting here ,tho sorry to say it is because you have a health concern for one of your koi.

Oil of cloves can readily be found in many grocery stores as well and if you have a friend who knows a dentist they have it as Eugenol.....

I'm not much of a big proponent of injections unless absolutely necessary. good water and healthy immune systems make for easier ways to heal.Unless your comfortable with a needle you can cause additional problems, so getting instructions if your new to this sort of thing is best.

In the U.S. KHA advisors are a great advocate to show you how and what to do
if your new to this stuff. Any AKCA affilited koi club will have several...

By sedating the koi, you can keep it from furthur injury and if no help is available a simple swabbing of Iodine or mercuricrome will work wonders.
Keep both away from the Gills....

For a wound the size of what this fish has, I don't go through the steps of putting the fish down to work on it. I would simply hold the fish with it's head in the water and tail end out. Pat the area dry with a paper towel (maybe someone can assist you to do this while you hold the fish - depending on it's size) apply MERCUROCHROME - NOT IODINE using a Q-tip. Make sure to do your best to get under the scales as much as possible. Blow gently on the wound area to help the tincture dry quicker, then after approx. 30 sec., release the fish. It certainly helps if you have a quarantine tank. This will allow follow-up treatments as necessary. By the way, only one treatment with Mercurochrome is recommended. Otherwise, you could damage the epidermis by burning it and when it heals, the scales won't grow back. It will have a permanent scar. Also, some folks are proponents of Potassium Permanganate mixed as a paste. If the wound is anywhere that will be seen, don't do it. IT WILL cauterize the area and the scales will NOT grow back.
