My wife says it is amusing to see grown adults acting like 8 yr old kids.

Keep pushing buttons guys, see where it leads for ya in life. A wise man told me once that those who think the pretense of knowledge or power is an excuse for denigrading others miss the entire point of life itself. Regardless of JR's koi 'knowledge' (funny the breeders don't think as much of him as some of you clearly do), he is a jerk. Everyone pretty much knows that now. That is his real fame in this hobby, like it or not. A nasty old man who demands respect but offers none. I will be taking a break from here for a while because I think the nastiness certain folks egoes and words have created is pointless and hurts the hobby. I bet if I come back in a few months you dogs will do liek you did last time I took a break, and devour each other and laugh at each other instead. It does not really hwo laughs or why or who laughs first. The funny part in life is who is laughing and truly happy at the end.

I got into this hobby many years ago to relax, this has turned into anything but. Every time I log on to talk with other passionate hobbiests to find a bunch of nasty and immature personal attacks. Something I thought this board did not allow. Just wanted to let those of you I have not had these conflicts know I have appreciated you and enjoyed chatting back and forth and hope to one day meet more of you to ENJOY the hobby together. I am not interested in any more adolescent pissing games, or who knows 'more' and who is struggling with shriveled nut syndrome today. I will post info I feel is helpful to the hobby and hobbiests. Perhaps more about bentonite or other things. Such as the powers of melafix and injections of meds and hormones etc. Remember, a healthy koi is a happy koi. And a healthy person, is a happy person.

Larrry,
I think alot (not all) of this is pointless when the virus can be transmitted with a small vial or amount of liquid, and the breeders have to have open facilities to sell to dealers. The only solution is to keep the breedery locations hidden or to keep them well protected or covered so no dealer or koi don juan can put anything in their water. It is unfortunate we live in times when those need to be real concerns. Even Einstein knew the key to peace was world security via technology and a security strategy that lets folks expose who and what they really are.

Even on beginner boards it's well established that Melafix's only power is making things smell better. It is not medicinal or antibacterial in the pond (or QT), and it has no curative powers.

So. please -- survey the state of the art before you think about hawking that snake oil on this board.

Jg...you kinda sounded ok, until you mentioned melafix. I'm afraid that sent the credibility out the window...and crashing into the pavement below. Might as well add perfume to your water. It does smell pretty though!!

Don I am not the one hawking koi clay or 'true tategoi', I believe that would be you and your buddies. Here is an excerpt from a real world test. Try reading a complete article once in a while. Or even just once.

"Here we see the same fish at the two week mark. Without any intervention except regular strength MelaFix applied daily and without water changes, we have almost complete healing. The fish is not currently receving any more MelaFix.
So far we have established:
  • MelaFix does not harm the filter
  • MelaFix does not impact the pH
  • MelaFix is NOT bactericidal as claimed.
  • MelaFix (1% Melaleuca) ENHANCES AND SPEEDS HEALING
  • MelaFix is the most impressive water borne treatment for superficial wounds and bacterial sores I have ever seen.
  • MelaFix is non toxic to all freshwater species tested.
  • MelaFix may obviate the need for injections in superficially infected fish.
  • I will probably add the recommendation of MelaFix to all my cases where a water treatment is practicable and where healing is urgently needed.
Consider MelaFix most favorably in the following conditions:
  • Many fish are infected and injection is impractical
  • Fish are in small enough bodies of water to be treated economically
  • Fish have wounds which are lmited to the body, mouth and fins, without systemic or septic signs.
  • Recently handled fish at retail
  • Fish whose ulcers are "almost healed" but stubbornly will not go away
  • Fish with breeding abrasions
  • Small species of fish which would not survive or tolerate injection.
My thanks to Aquarium Pharmaceuticals for a 1% and a 5% solutions for testing purposes. Thank you for providing quantities sufficient for replications in at least ten different situations and cases. More results will be posted here as they are received. If you have cases which you would like me to know about, please send me a fax at (770) 973 0301

Once again, Jorge . . .

when personally challenged you resorted to googling up a cut & paste response. So predictable.

Unfortunately for you, you picked up an old, old paid endorsement by the Large Vet -- an endorsement which even his own board's koi health advisors reject outright. The best thing they'll say about it on his board (KoiVet) is that it won't do much harm unless there's impaired gill function, in which case the Melafix's coating effect on the lamellae might cause additional problems.

Right in the advert you linked to, Eric says: "Melafix is promoted to have antibacterial properties but our research has shown this is not the case. We treated an inhabited system for five consecutive days and then ran CFU (colony forming unit) tests on the water and found a typical population of Aeromonas hydrophila/caviae, and Citrobacter freundii, as well as Serratia spp." [emphasis added. DPC]

I know these things, Jorge, 'cause I've actually read hundreds and hundreds of sick koi threads on KoiVet and other boards, and the consensus is clear. Your advice sucks. Big time. Not only that, but it can be dangerous and I don't want NKK's to be mislead by you into thinking they're doing the right thing.

But, hey, don't take my word for it -- go talk to REC. Remember him? The guy you mistakenly said was a vet the other day??

Well, instead of Melafix or other unrelated to KHV news.... Here is the lastest info as of July 10th, 2006 --- Hope they will post on their website soon...

--Dinh

=To worldwide Nishikigoi lovers and dealers=We greatly appreciate the messages of understanding and encouragement you have sent from all over the world regarding the KHV infection research results reported on June 28 and July 7.
Some have expressed concerns on why the real names of the breeders or Koi Farms who owned the infected Koi have not been disclosed, or some have stated that they should be disclosed. In reflecting those opinions, we would like to take this opportunity to explain why we, INPC, made a decision not to announce them.

Needless to say, we have identified all of the breeders who owned the KHV infected Koi. We of course discussed whether the real names should be disclosed or not. Upon discussion, we came to a conclusion not to, at least not on the internet, for the following two reasons.

1) Those of you who have visited the Nishikigoi production area in Niigagata know well that all breeders raise Koi by distributing them into numerous ponds (or pools). Considering only production efficiency, it might be better to gather them in one big pond, but the breeders distribute them to diversify risks and to produce high-quality Nishikigoi. This method has been used for a long time in the birthplace of Nishikigoi and will not be changed. So when there is a misfortune of an outbreak of KHV such as this time, the breeders cull all of the Koi from the pond (or pool) from where the infected Koi was found. Then water is drained from that pond or pool, and they are thoroughly disinfected. At the same time, non-infected Koi (KHV free Koi) are put into other ponds and pools under strict control to identify other possible occurrences of KHV. These KHV free Koi are always available from Niigata Prefecture’s public experiment organization. If and when there are slightest signs of infection, Koi in that pond or pool are immediately culled, and they are disinfected. The progress reports that have been released earlier are based on these processes.

Stated in other words, the breeders which owned the KHV infected Koi have culled part of their Koi but still keep breeding many Koi that have been confirmed to be safe. They will be sold along with other breeders’ Koi when their safety is completely confirmed.
Not all Koi lovers and dealers are fully aware of these procedures and KHV countermeasures. If we announce the real names of the breeders, some people may be misinformed and may suspect Koi from those breeders that are proven to be safe. We want to avoid this situation. This is our first reason.

2) Niigata, as the place of origin of Nishikigoi, has a 200-year history, and the majority of the breeders run Koi farms as their family business. Because of that many of them have the same last names or have Koi farms with the same names. Therefore, if we announce the real names of the breeders or Koi farms, there is a great possibility that cognominal breeders or Koi farms may be mistaken for the breeder of the KHV Koi. Of course they are in no way responsible for the KHV occurrence. This is the second reason: to avoid the risk of involving unrelated breeders.

As already informed, we were able to take complete measures against the KHV outbreak for the following reasons; appropriate actions were taken immediately after the outbreak, handling was easy fortunately because occurrence was during spawning to fry season, and circulation of the infected Koi in the market was prevented.

KHV is, unfortunately, an infectious disease caused by a virus that can break out in any part the world at any time. There is no way to reduce the risk of KHV by 100 percent. That is why, an industry-government-academia team works together to protect the Nishikigoi, the Japanese traditional culture and Niigata’s pride, from the risk of KHV.

Niigata’s Nishikigoi breeders, without exception, have a lot of pride and love in breeding Nishikigoi. If none of the risks mentioned above would exist upon disclosing names of breeders’ who owned the infected Koi, they themselves would like to personally meet you to kneel down to the ground and apologize for causing anxiety and for letting the Koi become infected due to their own carelessness.

I hope you will understand our perspective and also place your trust in that Niigata still is the best supplying district for the safest and high-quality Nishikigoi.

George David Einstein , I think I need my friends down there to return that missing shovel!

For the lurker and new koi keeper reading this--

Koi are actually great healers if just a few things are present/provided. Problem is, healing also tends to leave a scar and also disrupt the scale's gemination pocket. If that happens, the scales lost will grow back in a distorted manner or in a different color- usually darker than the surrounding unaffected scales. So healing alone, especially with a show fish that has an aeromonas ulcer needs more than just a topic ointment or liquid plant extract!

If you find that you have a 'hot ulcer' you need to attack it from above and below. Below involves antibiotic injects and above involves cleaning the ulcer of dead tissue, disinfecting the ulcer to eliminate the invading bacteria bed and applying an antibiotic ointment with a steroid to stop bacteria proliferation and to reduce the swelling so that the cells can repair. IF the scale is involved, one needs to use a qtip ( type with a pointed end) and clean out the base of the scale with betadine to removed dead cells and decayed tissue- this must be done gently! Meaning the koi must be put under for this procedure. After cleaning apply the antibiotic ointment and steroid with a clean Qtip. I have saved many a scale using this technique. You just need to go slow and be gentle and thorough.

And finally, because ultimately any complete healing requires a healthy and active immune system response, we need the subject koi in perfect water condition and ideal water temperatures. To this setting we want mild salt presence for slime coat production response and a high quality diet ( fresh protein in very small but frequent amounts).
