Shin Goshiki

Hi

Last month, we had two Japanese judges come to Sydney for our show. They mentioned that one of the emerging koi in Japan was called Shin Goshiki. I assume I have spelt it right. I have not been able to find information about it. it is suppose to be the reverse of a normal goshiki - ie swap locations of the ai and the hi.

Has anyone heard or seen anything like this?

Sounds more like another marketing ploy!? Wouldn't that make it a Koromo?

Marketing ploy, I doubt it, this information came from two Japanese ZNA judges.

No, not a Koromo. Remove the red pattern, to leave the ai (blue black) and replace the white on a Koromo with red..

I'll check around this October while I'm there. Gotta see it to believe it. Any mention of the breeder that's breeding it?

Hi

No, sorry no extra details.

I can imagine how it could have been breed. Cross a benigoi with a koromo thats has lost it hi.

Could be a nice koi!

Wouldn't this be a Aka Matsuba?

Don't think so Ray. Aka Matsuba would be entirely red with the Matsuba pattern on top. If I understand correctly, this would be sort of a reverse Kohaku, with Ai on the Shiroji.

I'm wondering if this is a one-off, so a Goshiki with a unusual pattern? Because right now I can not think of a variety that would give the genetics to produce this reverse kohaku pattern and be stable.

Hi Regenmeneer/Ray

yes, I imagine it would be like a reverse kohaku as you describe. Is it a one-off? The judges were quite direct in saying it was one of the emerging types.

Because right now I can not think of a variety that would give the genetics to produce this reverse kohaku pattern and be stable. The closest thing I can think of would be something out of an Asagi spawn. Occassionally I have seen Asagi with no Ai - and these are usually culls. To breed something like that would require alot of dedication and alot of failure.

Bradley,

I've had the same thought, that it might have some asagi in it. But then again, asagi do not have a reverse kohaku pattern. Also, asagi do not have the indigo on the head, whereas goshiki do.
