Heisei Nishiki and Yamato Nishiki

Heisei Nishiki and Yamato Nishiki

I've been trying to find out for some years now what a Heisei Nishiki is. I've asked judges at shows and seminars, dealers and others that might know. But untill now I still did not get a definitive answer. The answers I got were that it is a Hikari (metallic) Doitsu Goromo, a special name just for the Doitsu version of the Yamato Nishiki, or that it is just a different name for the Yamato Nishiki, be it Wagoi or Doitsu.

I just ran across a Heisei Nishiki on Joël Burkhards Pan Intercorp, and wondered again what a Heisei Nishiki is. Hope you can help me on this one.

Heisei Nishiki and Yamato Nishiki

Heisei Nishiki is a new name for a Doitsu Yamato Nishiki. As you probuly know in Japan the calendar starts over whenever a new Emperior is crowned and this ushers in a new era. Since the beginning of the last century a new type of koi has been named for every emperior. Here they are:

Tashio Sanke (Tashio era)
Showa Sanke (Showa era)
Heisei Nishiki (Heisei era)

Quite a effective sales gimmick to get to name something after a emperior. In case you have not noticed the Japanese are super at marketing. (No disrespect intented) I admire great marketing. Just need to understand the difference between a sales story and facts.

Ray,

Thanks for the answer.

I was aware of the background of the name, and that several years ago they were trying to get the name Heisei Nishiki recognized. Just not sure which variety they were giving the name to. All of the diffrent answers from judges got me confused.

Is Heisei Nishiki just used for the Doitsu version or the Wagoi as well?

Reg

ONLY the doitsu version

Ray

Shouldn't that be TAISHO rather than TASHIO?

So thats one of the few varieties that has a different name for the Doitsu version instead of just the prefix Doitsu.
