Soragoi

I have been reading on Chagoi and Ochiba lately, which has gotten me to wondering about Soragoi... how they grow, whether the color darkens like Asagi with age or lightens and darkens with the season as Chagoi can do. Looking through my books I find virtually nothing on Soragoi. The attention gets paid to Chagoi, it seems. I do recall having read in a magazine article that Soragoi do not grow as large as Chagoi, but other materials simply say that Soragoi grow fast like Chagoi or that they grow large without making comparisons.

What can folks tell me about this quiet colored carp?

I have seen quite a few Soragoi in Japan, and they seem to grow as big as Chagoi. Hosokai had some gorgeous three year olds last October. They were all a light blue/gray.

Well I got the Soragoi below when she was two as a gift for a friend of mine. At the time I believe she was around 20" I took this pic about a month ago and she is now 3 and probably pushing 28". So this one grew fast for sure. I should have kept her as she is a big sweetheart.

Problem Child

3 years ago (newbe) I wanted one, it got to be my fav, but Mark B. (the only dealer I knew at the time) couldn't get then. (only Gin Rin, Never liked shinny scales) So, but, because I could'nt wait, I got one.....(see photo)

She's growing nicely and I don't think the fish knows I don't like her, but out of 3 ponds she's the only fish, that consistantly has a broken fin, a torn pectoral (often infected at the base) Happened in shipping and happens to be that way now again, a torn infected doral fin, (from varied Bird attacks,) got into a fight with a racoon, (really, it's not me, all other fish never have problems.) The only good thing is she's allowed me to practice giving 3 different antibiotics. (at different times)

many times I'm asked how a person gets a good bekko...and i tell them they don't breed them but if you can get a sanke to loose it's beni...(especially
tancho ) then whal-laaa you have one. Reason I mention it that some of the best soragoi's even seen were former ochibas' ( in another life) LOL! The lighter the grey at tosai the better...kinda like an ogon...the lightest yellow ones turn out the best....the folks i stayed with in idaho for the seminar have a great example of a former ochiba that 's now a killer soragoi....

Pardon me for saying so, but isn't this a pic of an ochiba? Brown markings on the pecs and at the base of the tail tell me so!?

I have read that a soragoi is a blue/grey fish with a definite pinecone pattern. This is more asagi-like than an ochiba with no brown? Here is a picture of a 6-8inch soragoi.

Funny you should mention that, Dick. Our soragoi was one of those -- one that started out as an ochiba.

Here's a pix of her from last year when her nose was still sorta brownish -- it's much greyer now. Don't think anyone would be able to tell her history by looking at her now.

I didn't say it was a good soragoi. I don't think it has enough brown to really qualify it has an ochiba. You can see in the pic all the brown it has and that ain't much (but enough to make it not a great example).

From what I've read in my research on soragoi and chagoi in relation to ochiba, is that ochiba has been derived from soragoi/chagoi X, soragoi/kohaku X, chagoi/kohaku X, soragoi/hariwake X, chagoi/hariwake X, soragoi/asagi X, chagoi/asagi X, soragoi/ochiba X, chagoi/ochiba X and ochiba/ochiba X.

If this is so, then perhaps Jim's soragoi came from a soragoi/chagoi X.

Marie
