Nexus/Keirin Koi

I just got a Nexus and I love it. Bob from
Keirin installed it this weekend. They have a great sale
going on and if you have been thinking about getting one
now is the time. My pond is clearer than it has ever
been.

It could just be that the original system was not that great. I have installed filters on systems that have been totally green, only to have them clear up in a day. I think any better filter than you already have would do the same.

Steve

What with the hot, hot weather we're having, my water crept up over 80F. The water quality began to decline, including suspended algae that would rise during the day (due to oxygen content) and sink once the sun went off the water (changing to carbon dioxide). There was much turbidity in the water. So, i did 10% water changes every other day for 3X. This didn't really do much. So, I decided to check my U V lights. the quartz sleeves were covered with film and the lamps needed changing anyway (over 1 year old). So, I did that last evening while doing the 3rd water change in 5 days. When I went out to feed the fish this morning, most ALL of the suspended algae was gone!! There is still some turbidity but that's clearing up too! I still think the water changes ended up helping (which I will continue to do every other day) and cleaning those quartz sleeves and replacing the lamps (160 watts worth) did the rest.

As Russ says, sometimes adding to, or adjusting your filtration helps.

Russ

I still have to figure out how I'm going to set up the filter for Lithaqua. Maybe I'll add another Spirex or Kormex tank in line with the other two,so First chamber pumped from mid-level intake to settlement, to matala mat (mechanical/bio), then to air-infused Lithaqua before returning to the pond via waterfall. I think that may be the way to go. Unless I just add a shower system above my existing jap-mat tank using a separate pump to circulate the water up and back down before exiting the tank to the waterfall. What do you think?

Mike,

I left home since last Sunday so don't really know what the current pond temp is but with the heat wave going on, my pond water temp is probably exceeded 80 F degrees. it got about 6 hrs direct sunlight. btw, it's hot and windy here in Chicago as well.

regarding the UV lamp replacement, I turned off the UV back in Sept 2005 and turned it back On 5 weeks ago after I noticed the pond water started to turn green. it cleared up in couple days. this is with the 2.5 yrs old UV lamp. I know the manuf. recommends to replace the UV lamp every 12 months but my approach is that if the water is not green, keep the green in your pocket.

during the summer months, I replace 10% to 20% of the water twice a week. it really help to keep the water clean and keep the fish healthy.

It did work that quick

I think it was the filter that I had on the system prior. I just don't think an all closed system does the job. I have had
the other for over a year and I still had cloudy water, It had never completely cycled either. I will keep you posted on how it is doing, but this morning it was even clearer than the day before. I have done daily water changes to clear up the water since some time in May and still no good. I do have a UV, but I think it was just particles in the water as the filter just was not doing the job. I have been very surprised at the difference this fast also, but I have seen it with my own eyes. I can see my favorite Chagoi past 1 foot for the first time in almost a year. Good thing they are friendly or I would have never seen him.

What I really like about this thread, is that it points out how important good filtration really is. The only way to achieve good filtration is to understand what you need to filter and how it works. We have so many people we come across that spend all of their money on Koi and not filtration. Filtration is always evolving, and we need to understand the environment the pond is in and the fish load.
I am glad to read that you are having good results. Congratulations!

You are so right

I did not understand the way filters work, all I heard was how
great bead filters were when I originally purchased my other filter. I think that it is very important to know your water parameters before you purchase. The KH is a very important measure if you are on a well. Especially if it is low.
