this may be a very dumb question but....

I have several black fry. They are different than the others, much sleeker build, shy and very fast . They almost seem like completely different fish - whats the story?
thank you in advance.!
Bev

Probably "throw-backs", "reverts", or whatever you want to call them. Magoi-type fish that may maintain the wild coloration. Are they growing faster that the others? Were the parents matsuba?

ahh, i was wondering

they are about the same length but much narrower and sleeker. smaller heads. and they behave so differently - they are very shy, and fast I didnt even know i had 2 of them for over a month.
my adult koi are mutts - one male is almost all orange and the rest are splotchy with no distinctive patterns. (white, orange and black) I have so much greenery right now its hard to get pics.
thanks for the response!

Some of those splotchy sort of koi can throw about 95% wild-type offspring. The first koi spawn I ever reared was like that. I kept waiting for them to change color like goldfish - but of course they never did.

I think Steve Nailed it

I had a few throwbacks last year too. Just a handfull, but several of them seem to lighten up to khaki tan/Olive in the right surroundings so they may just be darker chagoi.
