Making Water

Hi Bito-board,

Just finished my overly expensive 6000 gal puddle, and dropped only 3 of these suckers in a couple of days ago. Almost can't see the bottom now, kinda milky, but the tester fish love it, instead of being skittish, they almost follow you around now. Must have brought down the ammonia. Anyone else have experience with these mysterious pellets?

Got these from Taro (Kodama) a year ago...

A follow up water making question -- do the clay additives settle/crust eventually in the pipes?

The only product I use from JKO was VL, kinda made my fish's skin glowed...

I use clay (Refresh), seems to settle more in my bio than crust up in the pipe work. I think if you have a bottom drain that is fed into a vortex the purging of the lines should keep it from crusting, and I do mean purging on a regular basis....

Thanks for the assurance Tony.

Here's an article that's appeared in a number of places, saying making water is like blind people passing their hands over an elephant. What the h*ll is this dude saying????? Use Refresh or your elephant will poop???

Misunderstandings of making water
and making a pond

by Mr.Kazuya Akasaka

Blind men pass their hands over an elephant.

There are words in a sacred book of Buddhism that blind men pass their hands over elephant.
This is an anecdote warning that judging whole figure of an elephant by touching parts of the animal leads us to misunderstand the real figure. Then, what is the condition of pond water to keep Nisikigoi?

Every person who keeps Nisikigoi knows the wards"making fish is making water".As same as air is necessary for human, water is necessary for fish because water is total environment for them. Therefore, keeping Nisikigoi has to start from making pond water for fish to live healthy.

However, asking pond owners"what condition of water is suitable for Nisikigoi?"they give me various answers. One owner says,"My pond has clear water, which is best".Another says,"Water of my pond is best, because it is within standard when the water was examined"
In addition, another is proud saying"My pond has assimilated good water,
so, my koi eat much and their swim is excellent"
Answers are various, but common position is that pond water is judged by only one phenomenon.

What is good water?
Different from fish-breeding ponds, concrete ponds of fanciers are for seeing koi. Therefore, clear water is essential condition, which is a matter of course. On the base of it, pond water in which koi can grow healthy is good life water.
In such water, as"always to be healthy is the first condition"their koi grow naturally"far from illness".
Illness free carps swim and eat well, so it is guaranteed that koi get big growth.
As healthy koi secrete slime much, which protect their body, mucous membrane of the skin gets thick and reflects glossily. Therefore, we can appreciate koi in a pond better.
First, fanciers' common request is to have koi' beautiful figure in a pond.
Further, considering from breeder's position, cleaning free (labor free) pond is desirable.
"Making pond with low cost"is also desirable.
Further,"no maintenance cost"is nice for pond owners. In short, ponds, which need small initial cost and running cost is best.
Not by filtration but by purification
Without making a good pond, good pond water can not be obtained.
Without making good pond water, good koi never grow.
Great number of various kinds microorganism live in purification tank under in good balance. We have to understand the fact that the earth is based on activity of microorganism.Koi and microorganism live symbiotically balancing both in quality and in quantity.
"To live symbiotically" means to live together getting benefits each other. Therefore, making a pond is nothing but setting up a suitable purification tank, and is not to construct an exaggerated filtration tank.
Filtration is to filtrate materials as the word means, but purification is"to make microorganism owe role to purify water".
I hope difference between purification and filtration can be realizing.
Details of purification will be mentioning gradually from next time.
Please put the feet into your understanding that pond water should not be clearing through filtration but be made suitable condition for koi' lives through purification.
I wish you to say good bye to the past misunderstanding.

Then, how such a pond should be made?
My business is to design using basic know-how (Refresh System) of pond and purification tank.
So far, I have been designing more than one hundred ponds.
I have also been designing many times for reforming existing ponds.
Construction of ponds is done by my partners.
Making ponds in foreign countries
I have been worried to know through English magazine for Nisikigoi
and talking with others that filtration are taken too many in making ponds in foreign countries on the base of many misunderstandings.
I do not know where these misunderstandings come from. Recently,
stress has been building up in me,because I have to press down my feeling to go there and correct their way of making ponds.

In Taiwan, the Philippines, and probably other places, the term "making water" refers to the process of aging water, adding some organic fertilizer to get some life growing in it, letting it start to turn green and otherwise making it ready to add fish. I guess you use different recipes for "making water" depending on the target species.
