I have a question. Could KHV compare at all to meningitis in humans? Compared as in we all carry the meningitis bacteria in our mouths. Every one of us. It is only under certain conditions that we can become infected with it, either from our own selves when our immune systems bottom out or from "strange" bacterium from the mouths of other people. I know I'm comparing apples and oranges here because what I'm talking about is a bacteria and KHV is a virus (though there is a meningitis virus as well). But could KHV possibly be something that is residing in most/all koi, but because of some change in nature or environment or genetics, it has become infective and offensive?

I know, no scientific terms or knowledge to ask the question correctly, but could the idea be sound?

No fortunately not- KHV is a herpes virus, more similar to herpes in humans than bacterial infections. JR

Okay. So you have to catch it first and then you have it for life.
*nodnod*
Gotcha.

Thanks JR,

Yume Koi KHV Updates . . .

12th August 2006:

Yesterday (Friday) we have trevelled to London, and up the East side of the UK up to Newcastle, taking blood samples of all of the Koi we have sold this year, and then today, we travelled down through the Midlands doing more of the same. Unfortunately, time was short, so we missed one client in Dudley, whom we will be going back to either tomorrow, or Monday. Then, on Monday, we have to visit severla ponds in Wales to take further blood samples, and also two hobbiests in Devon. When this is done, our blood sampling will be complete apart from three Koi whose owners we are still awaiting contact from. We hope to have the results anti-body (carrier) results from CEFAS within the next week or so.
On Tuesday, we intend to blood sample all of the Koi in our infected ponds, which will be sent to America for extensive testing, so that we can determine the original carrier. Please note that this testing isn\'t with the intention of naming and shaming the source, but to enable us to get a better grasp of what happened, and also so that we can help the breeder to track down what has happened at their end. But, this is assuming that this came from a breeder, and wasn\'t an act of malice. The testing will hopefully determine this.

I briefly visited the North East Koi Show this morning. There were some wonderful Koi on Show, and a wonderful atmosphere there at the new venue. I wish to thank all those that went out of their way to talk to me and offer support. I would also like to thank Tim of Sakura Koi for sparing me some anaesthetic as my supply was depleted, John Hellens for my luxurious accomodation, and his lovely Wife Pauline for the wonderful breakfast.
Thanks also to those I visited, for all of the food and drinks along the way.

Mike

14th August 2006:

It is late, and I haven\'t been home long. Today, I went back to Birmingham to take blood samples from the remaining 4 Koi sold in that area. Then, next stop was Sawnsea, then Gower, and then Backwood (Welsh valleys) to sample the last of the Koi in Wales. Tomorrow, I will be travelling to Cullompton in Devon, and Paignton in Devon to cover that area. This will pretty much conclude the testing of all Koi sold since last November.
We are hoping to start getting test results back from Wednesday onwards.

The last few weeks have been extremely difficult and stressful. As for the past week\'s blood sampling, over the last couple of months, my weight has slowly dropped from 12 stone 7 lbs, to 12 stone 3 lbs. Over the past few days, my weight has risen by a pound. Whilst I am extremely grateful for your hospitality, perhaps it is best to refrain from feeding me. Elisa (my good lady, not the KHV test of the same name) says it is for my own good.

Goodnight for now,

Mike

16th August 2006:

On the 15th, we blood sampled all Koi sold in Devon, which pretty much completes the customers Koi sampling.
Today however, we commenced testing dealers and their customers Koi, starting with Nippon Nishikigoi, where we blood sampled every Koi there, and customers Koi.
Tomorrow, we will be testing more dealers Koi. We also hope to start getting test results back for Koi from our 8000 and 4400 gallon ponds tomorrow.
As for blood sampling of our infected Koi (investigative testing), this will probably be done on Sunday or Monday.

B.Scott . . .

thanks for the update links; hadn't checked in there since last week.

How very unfortunate that they also had KHV postives in their other two (larger) ponds holding the balance of last year's stock; we had all hoped that those ponds & their remaining koi were safe & secure.

But now that Mike has begun testing other dealers' koi (from the same suspect breeder), and some tests are popping positive, the investigation has reached a whole new level.

Now we just have to wait for the other shoe to drop.

How many of "us" are gonna get burned, too? If your dealer hasn't ELISA tested their koi, and/or you haven't properly QT'd them, who knows?

Wow. It is upsetting enough for someone to lose a personal collection to KHV....but to have your entire livelihood threatened is a major blow.

My heart goes out to Mike and his family and hope that they are able to weather this storm. They have my respect for the way they are handling things. Not an easy path.

To be sure Mike, when this bomb drops, the repercussions will be world wide. Of that I am sure. The breeder responsible KNOWS what is going on and is just turning a blind eye to the whole situation. See no evil... hear no evil... speak no evil.

The strange bit is that despite the infected koi being in the same pond as naive fish, the other fish have tested negative. Mike Snaden will be putting all the unaffected koi through a regime of temperature stressing and then retesting each and every fish to be sure that none of these fish are effected before considering offering any of these fish for sale at any time in the future. To date make has tested over 500 fish with the ELISA test and several others using a PCR test. The cost of this all is running into many thousands of pounds at a time when he has no income from his fish at all. It must be a great burden to make such costs at a time when the future of his whole enterprise is at stake. It say alot about the integrity of Mike as a person to be sure. The loss of fish to both Mike and his customers will no doubt run in above 100K if the quality of his fish are anything to go by.
Despite that and thanks to his efforts much info has been gained about this disease that will benefit us all in the long run I am sure.

Bravo Mike, I wish other dealers/breeders were half the man you are! I would be first in line to buy when things are taken care of.

Well if he gets wiped out, which I hope he doesn't, he is always welcome to retire down here and start a khv free breedery! The more the merrier.
