Good answer Marie.

I think how well breeding in the US progresses depends on alot of unrpedictable factor, one of them being sales for existing breeders. It takes money to get the higher quality oyagoi, and it takes time working with them to produce quality. It takes sales to afford all of that. I agree with aquitori about other non US breeders excelling perhaps a little faster, they are ahead some in the game. But in reality, all it takes for any one breeder is to find that magic pair/s.

I think the future is excellent!!! The current american breeders will continue to improve. I also think more japanese breeders will set up shop in the U.S.
I know Suda has an interest or partnership with blackwater creek. Why not Dainichi USA or Sakai America!!! I would love to see an omosako farm in the USA. Why not expand...it can probably be financially beneficial for the Bigger, well known farms.

Ummm.... Is a koi really "Sakai" if the culling and selection is done by someone else?

You know, this could read like the credits at the end of a movie.

Bloodline
Sakai

Oyagoi Selected By
So n' So

Bred By
So n' So's Koi Farm

Culled By
So n' So's Brother-in-Law

Reared By
So n' So's Hired Hands

Grown Out by
So n' So's Koi Kichi Neighbor

Yet at the root of all this, the beginnings, the pregenitor of it all is Sakai. We can call the koi anything we want, but until the breeder steps out of Sakai's bloodline, the fish will remain Sakai, with any modifications being credited to the breeder who selected the oyagoi parent stock. Meaning that if the produce of the breeder stock turns out to be crapagoi and gets worse from there, the breeder gets credit for it. If the stock is improved from the original parent stock, the breeder gets credit for it. But the second outcrossings are introduced, the bet is off and now the breeder has started his own bloodline upon whom his name should be given instead of Sakai's.

... So, when Sakai selects a Dainichi Kohaku to match with one of his, shares 50,000 fry with his cousin down the road, who raises them in his pond & culls and selects per his eye...

There is no "answer". My point is simply that everything in koi builds on the work of many who have gone before and comes down to the eye of a person sitting beside a bug-ridden pond on a sweltering afternoon.

Didn't Sakai's son work at pan intercorp for a while??? Why couldn't he, or another who works at the farm, come to the U.S. to help the culling process?? I didn't think only one person does ALL the culling for sakai fish farm?!?! Correct??
