A koi show is for the purpose of education and exposure to koi. And every show has to have competent key personnel in order for the show to have credibility. You need great benching talent, experienced recording people, experienced netters and bowlers and educated judges.
If you want to be a good judge, you need to take it very seriously. It is not a political position or an ego trip as some might think ( and unfortunately the reasons some are attracted to the program to begin with). It is a position of huge responsibility- period.
In that vein, I feel that one job is enough! One roll is enough!
A good judge needs to have worked most or all of the jobs at a show to be really well rounded. Bencher, show chairman, bowler- and yes, exhibitor. These are steps in understanding the mechanics and the show itself from other ‘angles’. But these experiences should be leading to a goal.
Sometimes I kinda wish I could throttle back to just being an exhibitor again. But for now I’m seeing out a commitment. Two trips to Japan being planned now- not for buying but for education, a power point presentation due in February and March. Three shows to do and articles to write. No real time to exhibit or to even focus on that roll in the show. It therefore has become only a requirement.
I loved my hobby/exhibitor career. It was a blast! And I have a cabinet of trophies to prove the fun I had along the way- anyone want to see the trophies! Please say yes! LOLs.
But seriously, as the poet said, you can never go home.
