Question Should Judges be more active in showing fish?

Should Judges be more active in showing fish even after they become judges?

What makes you think we are not? It is actually a requirement of AKCA judges to show our Koi at least once per year.

I'm a judge who doesn't show much any more. So why the contradiction? To love the hobby and to support the 'show' idea big time but not to be an avid exhibitor?? Its easy;
A koi show is for the purpose of education and exposure to koi. And every show has to have competent key personnel in order for the show to have credibility. You need great benching talent, experienced recording people, experienced netters and bowlers and educated judges.
If you want to be a good judge, you need to take it very seriously. It is not a political position or an ego trip as some might think ( and unfortunately the reasons some are attracted to the program to begin with). It is a position of huge responsibility- period.
In that vein, I feel that one job is enough! One roll is enough!
A good judge needs to have worked most or all of the jobs at a show to be really well rounded. Bencher, show chairman, bowler- and yes, exhibitor. These are steps in understanding the mechanics and the show itself from other ‘angles’. But these experiences should be leading to a goal.
Sometimes I kinda wish I could throttle back to just being an exhibitor again. But for now I’m seeing out a commitment. Two trips to Japan being planned now- not for buying but for education, a power point presentation due in February and March. Three shows to do and articles to write. No real time to exhibit or to even focus on that roll in the show. It therefore has become only a requirement.
I loved my hobby/exhibitor career. It was a blast! And I have a cabinet of trophies to prove the fun I had along the way- anyone want to see the trophies! Please say yes! LOLs.
But seriously, as the poet said, you can never go home.

JR you have a point, I guess it comes down to the person. But I do have to say that your on a way different level than most judges, you not the average bear.

I think it would be fun for the hobby though, ALL competing...

Time, Money, Energy

The amount of time, money, and energy one has to devote to the hobby on a competetive level is pretty huge to me. Not being a competetor or a judge I have enough fun just keeping up with my herd as it is . I can't imagine the additional strain on ones personal life that would be involved in making shows all over the country both as a judge when you aren't showing and as a competetor when you aren't judging . I get tired just thinking about it .

I have to say that since I got the badge I haven't shown my fish.
I used to, but during my trainee period it became restrictive.

I can't show fish in any show where I am a judge even if its only in a trainee capacity. So to get as much experience into those years as I could, I stopped showing so I could take advantages of the opportunities to train.

Back at my own show, where I can't judge (training or otherwise) I could have shown but for the last 3 years other show related commitments have taken priority.

So it is not a case of "I don't show because I am a judge" it more of a case of "Being a judge limits the opportunities to show".

I haven't given up on showing as the bags, bands, boxes and oxygen in my shed would testify to. It's just that right now I have other priorities.

A judge and participant are different roles in the same play. You can’t have one without another. A person can be an excellent participant and a very poor judge and vice versa. Being one doesn’t make the other. To be a judge in any discipline you need to study a lot, to train a lot, to know a lot and you must be dedicated to the responsibility you are committed with. If not, don’t be a judge. For participants is a question wining or losing for a judge is a question of being honest and right in conscientious.

Best Regards
