Hey! We have one of those things. Never knew it had a name or what it was. The wife hates it and stuck it over by the water lily barrels. First thing tomorrow morning I am going to check to see if it has oversized testicles - like they mentioned in the google search.

so you think that every pond should have a whimsical badger, that like "whimpy" will gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today...? I have a welcoming cat at the entrance to my japanese garden, a stone frog and several stone lanterns but no badger...

How could I resist..

I walked outside this AM and was taking a pic of the Tanuki in front of my door.. My neighbor looked at me like what the hell are you doing

I found this Tanuki my last trip to Japan. The bad part is I found it my 2nd day there. So I had to lug is around for 4 more days.. It was made in Tokoname, JP famous for many clay goods in Japan.

By the way the word tanuki is also used in Bonsai for a Graft onto a piece of driftwood making it look a part of the live tree...

That's right Joe, I thought I would expand. The Japanese consider a tanuki a "Badger" which to their beliefs is a sneak or trickster. In Bonsai it is considered a fake tree with new plant added to dead wood.
In the USA we call such a creation a "phoenix graft" like the phoenix bird in Greek Mythology, meaning rising or reborn in glorious artistic vision. Since I have spent countless hours creating a few tanuki trees, I prefer the second description myself.

Those things are wild. What looks like breasts, a massive sack, and a bonzai stalk, why?
