HMMMM!!

Airhead! Nancy is that a play on words?? No, you're not an airhead. Most people call it a swim bladder 'cuz that's what it does - it helps the fish swim.

Thank you Mike, But I thought most people called it a swim bladder, because that is what it is..

Anyway Dinh, if the fish does indeed have (swim Bladder) she is better off being put to fishie heaven. I remember about 4 years ago, Eastern had a 32" yamabuki, she fought so hard to come up for air.. it was sad to see her on the bottom all the time. But she did eat and did not seem to be suffering. But if it was my fish I would always wondered if she was in any pain.. So I would put her down.

Frank and I had a really b-i-t-c-h-e-n Budo Goromo, I am serious I have never seen one with the puriest white and the beautiful grape color. Anyway she was in several shows and won best in size 4 and best in class. Well one day we go out back and she looks a little swollen on her left side, so we kept an eye on her. Within 2 months it became huge, we had Dr. Rob Hildreth come look at her. We already new the answer but didn't want to do, what we new we had to do. So Rob comfirmed our thoughts she had a tumor. We talked and watched her for the next couple weeks. Finally we both said it is time, you see we both kept wondering is she in pain. Hell we would not let our dogs suffer, and they can tell you if they are in pain. So we put her down, I think it was one of the hardest things I have ever done concerning our koi. She was just so beautiful and we got so much enjoyment out of her. So sometimes we have to think of the pet, and not ourselfs.

Thanks folks, we saw this kohaku has trouble swim up and down so she would rest at a calm bottom spot on the pond floor. She would moves out to feed with much difficulty. That why we think she got swim/air bladder malfunction.

Many people say that swim bladder is incurable. But I remember some article I read sometime back indicated that bacteria infected bladder is curable with the right vet....I was told that Thom Blischok of Arizona knows that vet
with a special technique of filling the bladder with antibiotics. Not so sure Thom Blischok is KB member or not....

If the fish has bladder malfunction due to bacteria infection, does IP antibiotic injection help? I heard of a special technique of filling the infected bladder with liquid antibiotic by a vet ... Any suggestion?

Thanks,

Swimbladder Dysfunction

Sakai of Hiroshima has had very good success at treating swim bladder dysfunction in cases where the dysfunction is caused by bacterial infection (as opposed to trauma). Dr Nick St Erns also has a protocol that has been quite successful.

If you would like to call me at the office (daytime) I would be happy to give you some ideas. Don't be in a hurry to euthanize the koi.

Nancy that is a very nice avatar koi. Is she yours and if so could you tell us more about her, size, history, etc?
Aha, Nancy's avatar and languages that I can speak??? I guess you are trying to tell me that there is no cure for Swim Bladder (Air Bladder)? That is what many people say, but I read some where mentioned that bacteria infected bladder is curable with the right vet..... We will call Joel B soon and will let you know what we find....

BTW JG, guess how many languages that I can speak? ;-))

I do not think it is a swim bladder problem and bet the fish will show signs of dropsy and popeye in a few days. You need to find some injectible antibiotic. I don't do antibiotics and do not know which to recommend.
