on my reserch with my favorite vet. Sirimanapong Wanna DVM.
we found a lot of kois sinking at bottom and hardly to swim,
that got swim bladder disordered caused by bacterial infection, and also found some had a lot of gas in their intestine, by x-ray.
the first shall be cured by antibiotic injection
but the second we try to give a cure with simethicone to release the entrapped gas EOD. by feeding tube after anaesthetised. After 2 weeks most of them look better.
somehow we try to improve the dosage and technics further more.

Thanks Steve, this kohaku has trouble swim up and down and rest at a calm bottom spot on the pond floor. She would moves out to feed with much difficulty. She has all signs as described in Nancy's # 2 post. That why we think she has swim bladder issue. Just wonder what made you think it is not a swim bladder problem?

Man did you misread into my post. I was wanting to know because my guess is you know more than one and have a very high IQ, that was my point. Making an issue out of a terminology is pointless imho. Even doctors use unprofessional or 'wrong' terms with one another. I really wanted to know because imho you are very smart and have a very high iq, that is clear from your posts, and I was giving you the oppurtunity to demonstrate that in what I thought was a friendly way. I am also very familiar with how things can get translated or thought of or expressed out of whack, and then misneterpreted as ignorance due to being multilingual and trying to translate things in our minds. My view of you is that you are extremely intelligent and I felt you should be treated as such. That was my only 'hidden' point. I am also curious to find out how many and which cultures you are familiar with. I think the more the better, and the more well rounded person it makes, who respects others and treats them with dignity, something I have noticed you do with everyone.

I would call Joel if I were you and post what you find out here so we can all learn. I have never had to treat for bladder problems personally.

I wanted to know about Nancy's avatar because it looks nice and I don't remember it, so thought it might be a new addition or winner or something and wanted to know more. I was also pointing out that she keeps very nice koi. If I wrote anything that seemed offensive it was not intentional. Try to remember I only speak English on here, as everyone here speaks spanish, I did not intened to offend anyone, except of course JR. As though that were possible.

To begin at the beginning---

a fish that rests on the bottom, may or may not have swim bladder disease. ( and even swim bladder 'disease' ain't a disease!).

Lets look at this way- ALL fish with swim bladder disease sit on the bottom. BUT not all fish that sit on the bottom have swim bladder disease.

So this fish can't be diagnosed with any of the swim bladder complex of diseases unless you see the following:

1) a fish that appears to be wasted or swollen in the area of the swim bladder and as the disease progresses, the tail thinning.
2) a fish that struggles to get to the surface and sinks when it is exhausted from that effort. Its head will wag wildly during this effort.
3) a fish that blows bubbles and when it gets to the surface , gulps air.

More to follow, JR
